What is the difference between Contemplative and Centering prayer?

My parish offers a group meeting time for centering prayer once a week. It sounded interesting until I began to look up information online about it. There seems to be an orthodox stance against it- claiming it leads to or is similar to Eastern meditation practices.

Then this online search led me to contemplative prayer which seems to be an old, ongoing practice within the church. These two practices seem one in the same to me, so I am confused.

What are the differences and should I pursue the practice of one and not the other?

Thanks,
Joe

These links should explain centering prayer and the role Father Basil Pennington and Abbot Thomas Keating played in its creation.
