What is the difference between human and man

I’ve recently had the opportunity to study some esoteric teachings on Christianity. What I’ve learned has been very rewarding, but rather mind blowing. We had gotten into discussions on a difference between man and human. A human is supposedly a more evolved being in potential intellect than man and this is supposedly relevant to our current “situation.” I was hoping that someone who shares my beliefs as a Catholic and is familiar with the elitist, “man’s”, agenda against the human would be able to shed a light on this issue.
 
There is a definite difference between a “Man” and a “human”, but I would like to know the Catholic response to that as well. 🙂
 
OED defines ‘Man’ as:
“1. A human being (formerly explicitly irrespective of sex or age), a person. Now chiefly in general or indefinite applications, as in every man, any man, no man, (in pl.) all men, some men, many men etc.
2. The human race or species, humankind, mankind; Zool. The human race viewed as a genus (Homo) or species (H.sapiens) of animal.
3. An adult male person, as opp. to a woman or boy or both; an individiual (male) person.”

And ‘Human’ is:
“1. Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of humankind or people; belonging to humankind; of or belonging to the species Homo sapiens.
2. a) Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of (the faculties of) human beings as opp. to gods or God; fallible; mundane.
b) Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of the activities, relationships, etc., of human beings, esp. as distinct from those of lower animals, machines, mere objects. etc.
c) Having or showing the (esp. better) qualities distinctive of or attributed to human beings.”

Take your pick from each - I don’t know what redefinitions the Catholic Church may have come up with, but from your post it sounds as though they’re comparing the current state of humankind, with the potential of what it might become. Not sure where the ‘elitist’ aspect comes in, or what you think our “current situation” is?
