All baptist churches are “independent” or autonomous. The difference is that a Southern Baptist church will donate a percentage of their earnings or finances and give to the Southern Baptist Collective organization which then uses the money to support missionaries etc. In order to be a “member” your autonomous church must not only support the orginization but hold to a basic set of beliefs.
Independent churches send out their own missionaries. Most Independent Baptist have fundalmentalist leanings are very legalistic and it is in these groups you’ll see KJOism whereas the Southern Baptist churches are more progressive. Southern Baptist don’t count out the Catholic Church and sometimes play with catholic ideas.

Does this help?
:tiphat: thanks to both sambos 671 and zooey for their posts. your replies did help.
thanks. 👍

(I have no idea how a whole denomination in the Southern US managed to “go out from” a small church in Upstate NY:rolleyes:)…
Small point here. It’s worldwide, not just in the southern US. 👍

I’m skeptical of any church that is founded based on a motivation to maintain the institution of slavery (see Southern Baptist Convention, 1845).

In any event, Southern Baptists have traditionally held very anti-Catholic views (I am a former SB and I occasionally attend a SB church with my wife, who has not converted).
Click here for a good summation of the relationship between the SBC and the RCC. I like the way the author ends his essay: “…we still long for the day when the teaching office of the Catholic Church unambiguously affirms the very heart of the gospel message, and bows before the supreme authority of the Scriptures.”

If you ever truly were a involved in the southern baptist convention then you know that that bit about slavery is something the organization is truly sorry for, and an official apology was made.

Just as a side note: Did you know that over 20% of the SBC is black? 🙂

I’m not sure what you mean by “if” I was “truly involved” but hopefully my credibility has not been called into question… In any event, I was not involved in the organization (SBC), I was a member of a church affiliated with the SBC.

No, I didn’t know that, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. And yes, I understand that in 1995 they apologized for their misapplication of sola scriptura (i.e., scripture alone supports the idea that slavery is a divine right).
