Hi, Pug,

Again, as I was re-reading the posts, I came upon this:

quote: Pug
the Kingdom of God is nigh, that God reconciles the world to himself
advent of the Kingdom -----> God reconciles the world, thru Christ

Wow! Thank you!

Hi, Matt16_18

quote: Matt16_18
That God is light is not the Gospel. Even pagans can know that truth.

The good news is that the God-Man has come into the world to free men from the bondage to sin by following The Way. 🙂
Huh?

John’s gospel: John 1: 9

usccb.org/nab/bible/john/john1.htm

and the Creed:

“…Light, from Light…” [then: “true God, from true God”]

Have I missed a chapter, as Bertie Wooster would say?

Best,

God is light. That is a truth that was known before the Gospel was preached. In this thread, you asked the question, “What is the Gospel (the good news)?”

This is the Gospel:…Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matt. 4:17The good news is mercy for those who repent and follow the Way. The bad news is eternal damnation for those who do not repent and who refuse to follow the Way.

Hi, Matt16_18,

The good news, according to John 1:9

The true light…

Ancient peoples knew many things.
What they did not know, was that
Christ was the *true *light
That is part of the good news, I think.

Best, :tiphat:

“The reign of God is at hand”

This is good news. This is thegood news. This is the best of news!

Why?

Because, in the end, all the other gods that we serve will mislead us, or betray us, or in some other way fall short of giving us the life we strive for in serving them.

Where is the kingdom of Heaven?
When will the reign of God come upon us?

Consider the scriptures:

… This command which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, “who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?” Nor is it across the sea that you should say, “Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?” No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out. (Deuteronomy 30, 11-14)

Consider, also, the Gospel:

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the reign of God would come, [Jesus] replied: “You cannot tell by careful watching when the reign of God will come. Neither is it a matter of reporting that it is “here” or “there.” The reign of God is already in your midst.” (Luke 17, 20-22)

The reign of God is here. Now. Open your eyes , your ears, and your heart. Listen to the good news. Pursue it. Hunger and thirst for it. Pray for it. It is the source of life. With it, the world - with all its broken promises, shattered dreams, betrayals, mistakes, losses, and failures - can be made new again.

I would say that the good news is that the long-awaited Messiah is here, and He is much more than you ever imagined. The Jews expected a great earthly king, but many times Jesus indicates that his Kingdom is much more than an earthly Kingdom – “the Kingdom of heaven is like…”. He is here to win peace between us and God, but His mission is revealed gradually – with a certain urgency, but at the same time patiently.

Hello again reen,

I can’t speak for francisca, but I can speak for me. The statement “God is condemn to death by religion. But He lives among His people who truely believe Him”, speaks volumes to me.

Religion, however well-intentioned it may be, has done the most thorough job imaginable in distorting the true nature of God. It has turned an unconditionally loving, compassionate, forgiving God into a bloodthirsty God of vengeance, punishment, and condemnation.

Why is this so? I believe it is perhaps because we simply haven’t gotten in touch with that unconditional love in all of us…that part of us wherein God dwells. If WE punish, condemn, kill, etc, then so must God, for we are made in His image…or something like that. But that’s a misinterpretation. We ARE made in His image, but that image is, again, LOVE. Religion has “killed” this in us, sad to say, by creating a God that doesn’t exist. A God of fear, guilt, condemnation, and vengeance that none of us can say, with a clear conscience, even exists. If this is love, what is hate?

Religion, with its doctrine and dogma, has actually separated us from God. That which was intended to draw us closer has pushed us away. If God is the God described by religion, who wants Him? It is only when we experience Him by ourselves, without religion getting in the way, that we truly come to understand the true nature of God.

In this, religion has done us a great disservice.

Mike
Mike,

I don’t think you can make a blanket assessment like that. For me, and I assume many others, religion has brought us much closer to God. Catholic teachings on God’s love and mercy, His giving of his total self on the cross, renewed during each Mass – these have been treasures that have intensified my love for Christ. And love for Christ means loving the ones He loves – which is everyone. What better way to express this love than as a family of believers in communion? I believe love of God is best experienced in common worship with others. This is the God described to me in Catholic dogma and doctrines, and yes, I want Him. Do we live this life of love perfectly? No. No one does.

Without authoritive teaching, everyone pretty much makes up their own custom-made god. Authoritive teaching shows that what God is and what goodness is and what truth is doesn’t depend on our individual views of God. There is only one God. I am willing to accept that God is in many ways far different (and far better) than how I might perceive Him to be. Thanks be to God for that!

Some of what is perceived as negative views of God are really self-imposed. It is as if someone would say, “If you cover your eyes, you will be blind, it will be dark, and you are likely to trip and fall”. Some might think, “Darkness? Blindness? Tripping and falling? What sort of God would allow such things?! That’s not MY God!” God is a good parent and a good parent disciplines their children. Discipline is love. The punishment of tripping and falling isn’t meant to condemn us, but hopefully to get us to uncover our eyes. God wants what’s best for us!

Religion has been used as an excuse for many hateful and ungodly things and as a stick by self-righteous people to beat others over the head with. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the religion’s fault (to the degree that it doesn’t actually encourage hateful behavior). If someone killed the CEOs of the top ten corporations because he thought it would be better for the environment, that doesn’t mean that preserving the environment is a bad thing. Every one of us is a sinner – including every one who practices religion. That doesn’t mean that religion is bad.

God bless.

Hello All,

Sometimes I have to chuckle.

John the Baptist comes speaking of the wheat which will be gathered into heaven and the chaff which will be gathered up and burned in hell, and in this way he preaches the good news.

Well I guess it is good news for the wheat.

NAB LUKE 3:17 John the BaptizerHis winnowing-fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his barn; the the chaff he wil burn in unquenchable fire." Using exhortations of this sort, he preached the good news to the people.

The fire is there. It always was and always will be a potential hazard for us. The good news is now we know the way to avoid the fire - Practice forgiveness in our lives and find good in the world God has given us.

Hello trogiah,

And a couple of other things.

NAB MAT 25:41

Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

NAB REV 22:12

“Remember, I am coming soon! I bring with me the reward that will be given to each man as his conduct deserves. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End! **Happy are they who wash their robes so as to have free access to the tree of life **and enter the city through its gates Outside are the dogs and sorcerers, the fornicators and murderers, the idol-worshipers and all who love falsehood.
**NAB JOH 12:47 **

"If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words already has his judge, namely, the word I have spoken - it is that which will condemn him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own; no, the Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to speak. Since I know that his commandment means eternal life, whatever I say is spoken just as he instructed me."

NAB MAT 19:16

“Teacher, what good must I do to possess everlasting life?” He answered, “Why do you question me about what is good? There is One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." “Which ones?” he asked. Jesus replied “You shall not kill”; ‘You shall not commit adultery’; ‘You shall not steal’; ‘You shall not bear false witness’; ‘Honor your father and mother’; and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” **NAB MAT 5:20 **

I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven . "You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. NAB LUK 13:23

Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where (you) are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out.
