What is the Gospel?

Perhaps it would be more helpful if you told us what you think we should be doing.

I don’t really understand that, you have to explain. But one thing I do admit—Mormonism does not have a “Mariology”. To us Mary is no different from any other woman, apart from a special place she occupies by virtue of her bing the mother of Jesus.

We don’t. We see Mary was the mother of the Son of God—who was indeed God—therefore she has a special place by virtue of that appointment.

Sorry, but that just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Through the testimony of scripture, it is indisputable when Jesus became man He experienced human emotions of doubt, despair, frustration, anger, pain, love, the suffering of loss of a loved one (Lazarus) etc. While hanging nailed to the cross, barely able to breathe and suffering in unimaginable pain and torment, Jesus expressed the depth of His love and honor for Mary when He made certain before taking His last breath to bestow Mary to John as mother of His disciples and John (as representing his disciples) to honor Mary as his own mother. He did not tell John to take care of His mother, but rather introduced John to Mary with the direction to honor her as his own mother. As John was the single apostle present at that time it was he who received this direction but also notice Jesus did not say “John, behold thy mother” or “mother behold thy son, John”, Jesus specifically said, “son, behold thy mother” and He specifically said “mother, behold thy son”.

An equally impressive illustration of Jesus’ love, honor and respect for His mother was expressed during the wedding at Cana when although Jesus was hesitant to intervene, He performed His first miracle changing the water into wine solely due to His mother’s request. Also notice Mary didn’t have to ask a second time for His acceptance.

I was a Protestant for many years and never heard any teaching that Mary wasn’t the Mother of God.
That’s not suprising give the fact that most protesters rarely mention Mary if at all in their sermons, much less make any attempt to develop a theology concerning her that has traditionally been the focus of the Church.

The protestant reformation was a catastrophy.

Oh really! I have heard many sermons on Mary when I was a Protestant and all good!

What sort of Protestants?

When I was Protestant we talked about Mary once a year during Advent, but there was not really a lot to say - sometimes there would be a sermon based around the Magnificat, but mostly it was just “Wasn’t Mary a lucky girl to be picked by God,” as if Mary were nobody, really, and God had just randomly chosen her, without her being prepared from eternity for her role in Salvation. (In fact if anybody had mentioned the phrase “Mary’s role in Salvation” they would have been looked at like they had three heads, or something.)

Sorry that you never heard, I was a Baptist for many years and heard it a lot. Then my then husband went to a Assembly of God Church and I did too for many yeas and heard it preached there. Never anything negative.

Maam,

The only thing good that you heard in a protestant church was a result of the influence of the Church over the man speaking, whether he realizes this or not.

I have encountered a lot of Baptists who think that Mary was “merely a vessel” - perhaps your Baptist pastor was not trained at the same Seminary as the rest of them. 🙂

Protestants more than anything have a problem distinguishing between our honor of Mary and worship as given to our Lord…

Here, you have described the theology of the protestants to a T.
I don’t deny that some of our theological thinking is closer to Protestantism than to Catholicism. But on the more fundamental issues such as justification and salvation, the sacraments, the priesthood, we are closer to Catholicism than to Protestantism.

“Z” -

The mormom church is all about reestablishing the apostoloic sucession that was lost. Thomas Jefferson bemoaned the fact, as he looked around, that there was no true authority in the church.

This is what happens when we reject the Pope.

The reformers suceeded in only deforming christianity.

Joe Smith invented his own.

It’s not suprissing that he came up with something that had similiarities with the Catholic Church.

It all hinges on those golden tablets, doesn’t it?

A true devotion the the Blessed Mother will drive heresy out of your heart, “Z”.

There is 1 thing I am sure of and the messages I heard. But since most here have esp they know what I heard. Gosh you guys are really great:hmmm:

confused about the hostility between Randy and Tweetymom when both list themselves as Catholic . . . . if I’m confused, how many the more non-Catholics looking for answers here?
This is a common confusion for anyone who reads Tweety’s posts. She does not really hold Catholic faith. I think she was baptized Catholic, but was improperly catechized, left the Church, and adopted protestant theology. She recently returned to a Catholic parish, but has retained her Protestant theology. She is merely masquerading here on CAF as Catholic.

I think the Catholic Catechism would not call Sacred Tradition to be Scripture.
True, but the Catechism does call us to interpret Scripture in the light of the Apostolic Teaching (Sacred Tradition) which has been divinely preserved in the Church.

The Apostle Paul clearly revealed that everyone knows in part. For those who are united to Christ, we are led by the Spirit imperfectly. That’s why we have an internal battle in this life.
No, 2nd. the HS does not do anything “imperfectly”.

And the battle we have in this life is a result of the consequences of original sin, which are at odds with the will of the Spirit.

I am not what I should be ie. agree with him.👍
Actually, whoever you are is between you and your Creator. The problem here on CAF is that you purport yourself to be Catholic while rejecting the Catholic faith. It causes confusion to people, because they think you are accurately representing your faith in your affiliation, but you are not.
