O.K. history buffs, what is your choice for the greatest invention ever by an unknown person or group?

Justify your choice.

Thank you! 🙂
The computer. I absolutely love computers. I am fascinated by them. Computers next to electricity is revolutionary. I wish i knew how to build my own computer from absolute scratch. I mean soldering iron from scratch scratch.

All knowledge? What does that mean? What about knowledge of God?

The trouble with all these invention is they leave nothing for man to do. The car makes him unable to walk and creates air pollution. AC makes us unable to endure heat. Electrical devises make us dependent on the grid and corporations. I could go on and on… We have so much free time, that we have nothing to do but post on CAF!

Do you really want to know?

The greatest invention ever made by man is science.
I would call science a discovery of method, rather than an invention.

We usually call an invention something physical that exists and serves a useful purpose.

Science exists as a mental construct, not as a physical construct.

Example: nuclear energy was discovered, not invented.

But the atomic bomb was invented.

How to make fire might have had the most impact, since it was early enough to to influence the course of everything after and allowed us to populate the world. But then, is the first step the greatest acheivement in an Olympic runner’s life? It might be so, since without it none of what followed would have occurred. In terms of shear power, the atomic bomb could qualify since it permits us the capacity of quickly removing all humanity from existence. But, this view would result from being subjected to Cold War propaganda. If we do go in that direction it will be by the traditional slowly agonizing route. Music as a gift, needs expression, so the greatest most beautiful invention, I would say is the stringed instrument. A very few might argue it’s the bagpipes playing Amazing Grace. My wife is of Scottish descent and the greatest achievement might be how to keep our spouse happy; but you specify physical inventions. I suppose that question has to do with what has done us the greatest good. Beside there being much to choose from, it is difficult to separate invention from the discovery that makes it possible. The greatest discovery would be something we had from the start but gets eclipsed by the in the glamour and horrors of the world, God’s love. Considering Jesus as man, the greatest invention would be the mass, where the physical meets the metaphysical in the body of blood of Christ.

The 4 greatest inventions, from which all else derived, were:
  1. language - without it humans couldn’t think and would have remained animals
  2. technology - the alteration of the environment to increase the chance of survival, for example, tools and the use of fire.
  3. food creation - agriculture and domestication of animals
  4. money - the greatest aid to trade without which social structures would have not advanced beyond a tribal organization.
That’s my opinion
