What is the historical context of making the sign of the cross?

I always make the sign of the cross and a Protestant was asking where that came from. So I would like to educate myself and my protestant fried why we Catholics make the sign of the cross. I enjoy doing it and it reaffirms my commitment to Christ but I was wondering if you can give me more context that I can share with my friend.
