Thanks for the pictures.
God bless Pope Benedict XVI!
God bless Pope Benedict XVI!
I don’t think there is anything wrong with it…BUT…I’ve just seen much nicer ones. I also think that it’s too simple compared to the rest of the vestments. Kinda doesn’t go with it. But otherwise it’s GREAT!!!Can someone tell me what’s wrong with the miter? Is it just the way it looks (I think it looks fine)?
ThanksThe head gear.
If you look closely at the picture above with the deacons holding the Holy Father’s cope open, his coat of arms is at the ends of the orphreys–and it appears that they have the tiara.Since the Holy Father’s Coat of Arms now has the Mitre instead of the Tiara, I don’t think he’ll be bringing it back.
The ones with the tiara are not the Pope’s personal coat of arms, they are the Vatican’s. The Pope’s uses the mitre now, but the flag of the Vatican and the coat of arms for the Holy See still use the tiara. For some reason the Holy Father’s coat of arms tends to use the miter and the tiara interchangeably. There are also other features of his arms that are often changed or modified,
Here is the tapestry hanging from the balcony of St. Peter’s, showing the miter:

And here is the garden behind the Apostolic Palace, tiara clearly in view:

And the flag of the Papal Swiss Guards, again with the tiara:

Nor would I give the use of the miter on some versions of the coat of arms as an indication of the Holy Father’s opinion on the matter of the Papal tiara. For one thing, it was not designed by Benedict XVI, but by Archbishop Andrea Cardinal di Montezemolo.
Regardless of it’s lack of use by the past three Popes (though John Paul II did have one, even if he never wore it), Paul VI mandated that his successors wear the tiara and John Paul I kept it as an option.
There is another thing- since 1969 there has been an explicit ban on the use of the miter in the personal arms of bishops, and though of course His Holiness is free to dispense with the rule he has not issued any repeal or clarification or dispensation.
The arms in the Vatican gardens are most certainly those of the Pope himself, as are the ones in the upper-left corner of the flag of the Swiss Guards (the lower-right corner is the arms of Vatican City). I have also seen the tiara used over the Pope’s personal arms at various times. The ones with the tiara are not the Pope’s personal coat of arms, they are the Vatican’s. The Pope’s uses the mitre now, but the flag of the Vatican and the coat of arms for the Holy See still use the tiara.
