What is the importance of the Transfiguration of Christ that it is a rosary mystery?

It doesn’t seem like something very highlighting that happened in Jesus’ life. I also can’t see any lessons or aspects that I can learn from Jesus in this.

Basically, the Transfiguration was the point at which Peter, James and John became CONVINCED that Jesus was God, PLUS that He was confimed (in their minds, as observant Jews) to be the Messiah by the appearance with Moses and Elijah.

This appearance gave them the courage and knowledge to spread His Word. That’s the significance.

You should read the chapter on the transfiguration in Pope Benedicts Jesus of Nazareth, among other things he explains that Jesus is the new law being taken down from the mountain by Peter, James and John.

How’s this? In Byzantine Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodoxy, the light which shone from Jesus is considered to be uncreated grace. In their eyes, when we work together with God toward holiness we partake in this light which transforms us!

Peter, James and John see Moses and Elijah with Jesus so they are witnessing that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Laws and the Prophecies.

The exodus from Egypt was the central event in Jewish history. In this singular event, the nation of Israel was freed from bondage, they were given the law and the promise of the messiah, true worship of God was established, and they were placed as a people under the promise of God’s covenant. And the Jews saw the coming messiah as the “New Moses” who would bring about a new exodus.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Revelation 21:1-2)

The new exodus would not only bring the Jews into a new land, but it would physically transform the land. The Old Jerusalem would be transformed into a “New Jerusalem” and a “Heavenly Jerusalem” which would be part of God’s everlasting kingdom with Jesus as its king.

While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. (Luke 9:29-31)

Jesus is the new Moses, who is to acomplish a new exodus - an exodus from sin. During the first exodus, Moses went up onto the mountain to meet God personally, and to recieve the law from God himself. Now in this second exodus, God himself - Jesus Christ - goes up on the mountain and meets with Moses. The Old Moses never entered the promised land but the new Moses - Jesus Christ - ascended into his heavenly kingdom and in doing so, he fully completed what Moses could not. And that is the significance of the transfiguration. It is a revelation by God of who and what Jesus is, and what he was to acomplish, and how, and a revelation about the kingdom.

When you think of the transfiguration, think about Jesus as the New Moses, acomplishing a New Exodus from sin, as he leads us to his kingdom in the Heavenly Jerusalem spoken about in Revelation 21. And that’s what all the Luminous Mysteries are. They are revelation to us by God - light from God - about Jesus’ kingdom.

*Baptism of the Lord: start of the kingdom
Wedding at Cana: Manifestation of the kingdom
Proclamation of the Kingdom: Self explanitory
Transfiguration: Establishment of the kingdom
Eucharist: The king is with us forever. *

These are great mysteries. These are Luminous Mysteries because they are light, they are revelation from God. That is what we should mediate on and thank God for. And remember that in Jesus’ kingdom, Mary is the queen. That’s why we meditate on them in the context of the rosary.

See Divine Mercy Rosary. This mystery is linked to the first Sorrowful Mystery. It is note that Jesus took Peter, John and James with Him in both. The Transfiguration strengthened their faith for the ordeal of doubt which was close at hand.

Similarly, the Third Luminous Mystery, **THE PROCLAMATION OF THE KINGDOM, appears to link to the Third Sorrowful Mystery, **THE CROWNING WITH THORNS, where Jesus’ kingship is mocked.

Jesus replaces all that the Jews knew from Moses and the prophets.

The Father says ‘listen to Jesus.’

Jesus is greater than Moses and the prophets.
