What is the Kabbalah?

Can anyone tell me anything about the Kabbalah? I have tried to

find information on the net and did not find much.

What I did find made me wonder why an inteligent and successful

person like Maddona would be so keen on it to the extent of

promoting it like she has been doing
.

My impression is that it was a Jewish version of New Ageism.
