I’ve heard many great answers, thank you!

But, what has been boggling my mind is this question:

Is the Magisterium necessary for salvation?

If you could, please answer these ones:

How does the Magisterium contribute to our salvation

and

What are the disadvantages for those ecclesial communities that don’t have the Truth of the Catholic Faith, if any?
The Magisterium IS necessary for salvation, even though the Magisterium does not save. Let’s make that perfectly clear.

Why is it necessary? As I said above, through the Magisterium Christ reveals what has not been revealed in scripture and sacred tradition. Without it, you’re missing a part of Revelation. You may be missing the part of Revelation that YOU specifically need for your salvation.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

How would that revelation contribute to ones salvation?

The purpose of revelation is to save. God does not need us to be happy. He did perfectly fine before we came along. 😃 He loves us and wants to save us. Therefore, he will reveal about himself whatever is necessary and helpful for our salvation.

The magisterium is necessary for our salvation in the same way that a road is necessary to drive you car on. It might be possible to drive to your destination without a road, but it is going to be a whole lot tougher…Whereas a road, while seemingly somewhat restrictive, will also get you there faster, safer and with greater assurance.

It contributes to our salvation by NOT making each of us “reinvent the wheel”. In other words, those who have gone before us and have asked the same questions we ask, have likewise determined the best answers. We have access to those answers through the good offices of the magisterium thus removing the need for each generation to find the same answers over again. This allows us to simply get on with living a Good Catholic Christian life.

The main disadvantage is that, without a magisterial authority other communities have no way to surely and with confidence, resolve doctrinal matters that come up between individuals and/or communities. This has led to the many different doctrinal positions that even today keep shifting around. This forces the individual to select from a whole series of preached “truth(s)” with no authoritative office to review, dicuss, debate, and decide, which of the various positions are most accurate to the Gospel.

No, the Cardinals have nothing to do with it.

Really, the term “Magisterium” means “the Church’s authority to teach.” It does not have “members”; you cannot be “a part of the Magisterium.” Magisterium is an authority that the Church possesses and executes. To ask “who makes up the Magisterium?” makes as much sense as “who makes up the Church’s teaching authority?” It’s a clash of terminology.
The cardinals are bishops who have been selected to be the electors of a pope, when the position is vacant. This probably has historical details that I’m not familiar with, but the upshot is that it would be hard to pull all bishops of the world together for a conclave to elect a pope, and the voting would go on for a long time.

The magisterium is the office of teaching that was commissioned by Christ in Mt 28.

Christ’s command to teach all nations did not, in itself, provide the administrative detail on how to accomplish the command.

To contribute to the answer to the OP’s question, I would point out the chain of command.

Jesus Christ appoints the Pope and the apostles (the bishops); in other words, the Magisterium.

The Magisterium ordains the priests.

The priests pastor the local parishes and offer Mass.

The local parishes are where the lay people receive the Sacraments, especially Eucharist during Holy Mass. Also in the local parishes, the lay people are catechized to understand and live out their faith in their daily life, and to die in Christ in the hope of heaven.

Receiving Jesus and living out our faith in our daily life is how we are saved.

And receiving Jesus and living out our faith in our daily life is how non-Christians see Jesus and long for Him and His salvation.

So salvation comes from Jesus, but on this earth originates with the Magisterium. Without the Magisterium, there would be no priests. Without the priests, there would be no local parishes where the Sacraments are available and catechism is accomplished. WIthout the Sacraments, there would be no salvation, and without catechesis, there would be no understanding of how to be a Christian in daily life and eventually in death.

Make sense?

It must be necessary for accuracy, if Jesus created it.

If you could, please answer these ones:

it assures us of the transmission of the truth – Jesus knowing aforehand, that many false teachers would arise – refer to His parables about the sower and the wheat and the tares

and

What are the disadvantages for those ecclesial communities that don’t have the Truth of the Catholic Faith, if any?
the “disadvantages” have been discussed for centuries and range from damnation to God’s merciful judgment of non-believers by His mercy and sovereignty.
