What is the meaning of the stone dashing people to pieces? Matthew 21:44, Luke 20:18

What is God telling us with these passages? What does the stone signify and how does one fall on it or get crushed by it? How could it fall on us? From the NABRE Matthew 21 and Luke 20:

42 Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes’?
43

• Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.

  The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.]”

17 But he looked at them and asked, “What then does this scripture passage mean: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”

The Stone is Christ. It is an allusion to the vision of Daniel in which a large stone annihilates the kingdom by the hand of God, and Psalm 118:22.

Daniel 2:44-45

And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall its sovereignty be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand for ever; just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be hereafter. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

Who are the Builders? The Israelites

They rejected the stone that became the cornerstone.

Back in antiquity the cornerstone was a VERY important piece of a building.
If it not at right angles the building would be crooked.

So the Israelites were given a cornerstone and they rejected it. It was as a result given to other people and they built something awesome with it. THE CHURCH!

The rest flows from there. As well as the harking back to the prophecy of Daniel.
