I came into the Catholic Church from the Episcopalian, and my children were raised in that faith, although most of them have followed me into the RCC. Confirmation was required before children would be admitted to communion–in most cases a preparation class was held for several months during the regular Sunday school period for those around 12 - 16. Confirmation was administered by a Bishop, and was followed (at the same service) by the children receiving their first communion.
This was the normal process up to the middle of the 1970s–I don’t know if confirmation/communion is still handled the same way today…
