What is the most extreme thing you have done to avoid sin?

“To defend his purity, Saint Francis of Assisi rolled in the snow, Saint Benedict threw himself into a thorn bush, Saint Bernard plunged into an icy pond… You…, what have you done?”

I just wonder if anyone has had a cold shower or slaped their face or something else?

Also, did it work?

Thanks.

Pax Christi and Merry Christmas.

As a 2 1/2-year sober alcoholic, I’ve made a lot of changes!

New friends, new living arrangements, different social activities. AA meetings. More prayer.

Avoid the near occasion of sin, people!

God bless and Happy New Year!

Gave up all of my worldly friends (all of my human friends except those who are already in Heaven). I still don’t have any except who I see in Church and a few priests.

I made a habit of punching myself in the gut every time I was tempted to lust. I would keep punching myself until my flesh would settle down. I should probably start doing that again because the Devil is tempting me there lately. I had a nice bruise going. It is easier once you get a bruise going because then you don’t have to punch as hard in order for it to hurt enough to calm your flesh down.

(and I did not care who saw me do it! I would gladly punch myself in public if tempted to lust, and view it as potentially a good example to others!)

Other than that I also got in the habit of digging my nails into the palms of my hands. I still do that whenever tempted with just about any sin, if the temptation seems strong to me.

I think I will get back to punching myself though. It is more difficult through winter clothes, but once I get a bruise going it should work out OK.

1 Corinthians 9:27
But I chastise my body, and bring it into subjection: lest perhaps, when I have preached to others, I myself should become a castaway.

I recommend anyone struggling with temptations to lust/other temptations of impurity start punching themselves and praying every time they are tempted. It works!

God loves you

Got rid of former friends…just didn’t jive with my new path towards being a Catholic. God bless them all but there’s a time for some friendships to end.

I quit Twitter as well.

Got rid of former friends, went through some tests which I feel God put me through to strengthen me, made split second decisions often to commit to the church when sin has such a stranglehold on you to not go back to the Church, made commitments to go to prayer groups and places where I may have never wanted to before 👍

I hope this does not become a bragging thread. Please be careful with what you do to avoid sin. As much as I admire the saints. Some of their ascetic practices are not my cup of tea. Mortifying the flesh seems a little extreme. All things done for the love of God are wonderful though.

Generally things done for the love of God are good; but killing others for the ‘love of God’ is not, of course.

I find these posts helpful, it does make you feel that others out there have had to give things up for the Faith. It also makes me feel that things are possible, sometimes with the Saints you feel so much weaker than they were.

Once,I quit a job that expected me to be unethical. I have also changed my group of friends.

Sinned.

To avoid one sin, I have committed other sins that I thought were the “lesser of the two evils”.

It’s hard to know sometimes.

I haven’t done that yet, but I’m thinking about it. It’s such a time sucker!
I couldn’t get past my speed dial. All my past life at the click of a button. And then just having it in my hand made things so easy to get into. So finally I just tossed it. I figured I had to make a real world effort. Something hard. In order to get God to throw some extra grace my way.

And it worked. I guess.

Peace Evania.
