I have a protestant friend who says that the most important thing to God is his own glory and that we do everything for the glory of God can someone enlighten me on this?

And, giving glory to God is about loving Him and our neighbor as our self. All love comes from Him.

That is usually a Reformed/Calvinist view, which is the reason they believe everything is directly controlled by God which effectively cancels any human will, and especially cancels any free will. Who was/is/will be saved is dictated solely by God to bring Him glory.

Going by Scripture, namely the Gospels…

Matthew 22:37–40

37 And he (Jesus Christ) said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Love.
in all it’s forms.
Sacrificial, unitive, joyful, ecstatic, peaceful…
I think He recognizes us when we are loving.

Himself

The only true object for an infinite being. The only thing God could love or know infinitely is himself.

Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the gentle , for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
