Well what is it? I have heard St John Paul but to me that just gets confusing with JPI… Who could someday be a saint as well. 🤷
Is Just St John Paul correct?

What say you.

Popes are canonised according to their papal names, so JPII would be St. John Paul II.
If JPI were a Saint, he would be St. John Paul I, or St. John Paul since he is the first.

OK, so is St. John Paul correct or not?
No. You really need the number after the name, St John Paul II. The number does not get attached because he is the second Saint John Paul, but because he is the second pope named John Paul (and has been canonized a saint).

In the calendar, he will be listed in the style of other sainted popes: Saint John Paul II, pope. In everyday speech (if you are the habit of speaking of sainted popes everyday) it is common to style such saints as Pope Saint John Paul II (but it is not incorrect to do otherwise, unless omitting the number*).

People of such a mind may substitute the Great for the number II – Such title is a popular acclamation without any official procedure. None of the other “Great” sainted popes is known by that appellation in any such capacity.

(* Or the title “the Great” 😉 )

Thank you tee! That was very informative. It kinda bothered me that people were saying St John Paul.

Why not simply hold to the convention of Pope St [name + number if needed] as in Pope St Leo I, or Pope St Pius V, etc? Seems to me to be a lot easier and a lot clearer than anything else. 🤷

Pope St. John Paul II as we do with every other pope who became a saint.

I go between st. JPII and variations of his Christian given name, surname, sometimes with the prefix “our” said in Polish. This is bc I’m Polish and he is my namesake. I guess it hasn’t been long enough for the “saint” part to become second nature in my speech yet.

I would simply say, whatever usage can make it clear to your listener or reader of whom precisely you are talking of.
