I would like the official teaching on Malachi’s prophecy when he said, “Behold I will send you Elias the prophet, before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers: lest I come, and strike the earth with anathema.” (Malachi 4:5-6)
I understand that Jesus said St. John the Baptist was a type of Elias (Elijah) in Matthew.
“And his disciples asked him, saying: Why then do the scribes say that Elias must come first? But he answering, said to them: Elias indeed shall come, and restore all things. But I say to you, that Elias is already come, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind. So also the Son of man shall suffer from them. Then the disciples understood, that he had spoken to them of John the Baptist.” (Matt 17:10-13)
What I need to know is if “the great and terrible day” can refer to the second coming as well as the first? And why did Jesus say Elijah will come, and then say he already came. Could it mean Elijah will come again to convert the Jews before the end?
