What is the origin of Four Mysteries of Rosary?

The Luminous mysteries were actually first developed by St. George Preca in the 1950s for the Society of Christian Doctrine. They were already present in limited circles before St. John Paul II encouraged their use and proposed a weekly schedule that included them.

I read a book on the history of the Rosary a while back and it is actually unclear what Our Lady actually taught to St. Dominic if anything (she may have just encouraged the Marian Psalter which already was practiced at the time): The first documented mysteries to be associated with the Marian Psalter (150 aves), which went back a lot farther, was in about 1275 and the mysteries were three in number: Annunciation, Nativity, Assumption–that’s it. The 3 mysteries, allow “Mary’s Psalter” to actually line up with the 150 psalms.

They were revealed to Blessed Alan by our Lady in an apparition.

The Luminous Mysteries were not added until the 1900s.

What do you mean by ‘four mysteries’, though? Do you mean four of the 15 (old rosary - five each for the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries) or 20 (new rosary the 15 plus the new Luminous mysteries) or the actual four groupings, i.e. Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous and Glorious?
