What is the Origin of Rosary?

I would like to know the origin of the rosary with suggested references so that i can access for further study. I’m a member of Legion of Mary I would like to emphasise the rosary more because i only have little knowledge concerning its origin.

I.m a pen in God’s hand only He writes (Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcuta)
