What is the point in Demons possessing people?

Demons can move about extremely quickly as they are pure spirit but when they possess someone they are restricted to that person’s movements.

Also it must be easier to get someone to sin by tempting them than possessing them?

It’s not like the demons are thick and can’t work this out for themselves, I understand if they were able to possess a priest they could lead a flock astray but usually it is just somebody like us.

So why do they bother?

Thanks.

There is a WAR going on in the
spiritual realm(Eph. 6) and the
demons are doing EVERYTHING
they could to ruin soul’s(St. Michael
Prayer) so demon possession is
ONE way to ruin a soul and those
whom he/she loves, that’s my
humble opinion.

That was one of the strangest things to me about the Gospels when I first started reading them. Jesus casting out demons from everyone. Demons recognizing him when others could not. It is literally everywhere. Funny how it disappeared so much from modern Catholicism, Christianity. We have become so erudite about all this. My gut instinct is to go back to the Gospels. You see this in the Desert Fathers too. Fear of demons.

I don’t know about possession though - I don’t deny it as a possibility/probability. But I stop there - at the limit of my capacity to know. But I think humans are tempted to do evil all the time. Lie, steal, fail to do one’s duty. Anger, hate, fear. This could literally or figuratively be the work of demons. The Bible would support this view. Can one be a Christian and not believe in demons, the devil? I don’t think so. As we have become so learned and in control, we have built a world we inhabit which is basically just a mirror of our mind. Very boring. Quite constricted. We can individually choose to reject that.

On that note, I will revisit my ghost encounter I posted about on another thread. I do believe in ghosts. I have now concluded they are not necessarily evil or trying to get us to respond or help. I think ghosts are sometimes souls that are still active on the earth, usually where they lived, just because, for whatever reason, they have opted to be there. Attachment. I wonder though - are they in their time or ours? Can they go back and forth. This idea that this is scary I think is overkill. It is not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think my ghost was down on me being in her home. She just wanted me to give her her space and then she was cool. (I digress, sorry) I am interested in this stuff now.

A reason why a demon might possess someone is to lead them to despair of God’s love for them and perhaps also lead the person’s family and friends to despair as well. Another reason a demon might possess someone is malice: the desire to cause pain or harm. Demons are full of loathing and malice.

As for a demon being restricted to a person’s movements when they’ve possessed them, that is not true–at least not in most cases of possession in which the possession is partial in that the person possessed is only controlled by the demon or demons some of the time. There are cases of complete or perfect possession in which a person is always under control of a demon or demons, but I think in order for that to happen, a person has to give into the demon or demons inside them–in other words to stop fighting them.

They do it to claim a soul to Hell. Nothing more.

They rarely get permission to posses someone, usually if it happens, it happens by invitation, directly or indirectly.

Why would they want to? One reason is, that inhabiting a body on Earth is like living at the Plaza for them. You must know that even the demons hate hell. It is far more preferable to them to be “out on assignment” than to be in hell where they have to answer to demons who are above them. They suffer when priests try to remove them, or when people they oppress take positive actions, but even that is better than being in hell to them.

Demons are slaves who do everything out of vice. To have no virtue is to be slave to yourself.

Being demonically possessed seems to be a massive battle that requires a tremendous amount of personal holiness and a great cooperation with grace to overcome. The good that God can draw out of that battle, when the victim unites their sufferings to Christ, is certainly not to be taken lightly.

An exorcist once commented on a particular lady who was seeking his assistance. He noted that, during the time he knew her, there was a likelihood that she hadn’t willingly committed even a single venial sin. (I assume he was her confessor during this period.)

It is therefore a myth that the possessed are wicked people, or that one cannot be in a state of grace while being possessed, or that great sanctity is impossible to those under the devil’s extraordinary influence.

And those victim souls are powerful intercessors who may well have been made incredibly holy from their battles.

The same exorcist once remarked that the natural, lawful result of committing a mortal sin is full possession. But God does not permit the majority of folks to have to deal with that, primarily out of His goodness, but perhaps also because He knows that that would be a death sentence to most of us.

Remember the demons being permitted by Christ to go into the herd of swine? They killed those swine as soon as they entered them, and this is what they would do to us if they could.

But yet God mysteriously calls some to battle satan in an extraordinary way.

But they are not in hell yet…when they were cast out of heaven, they were cast down to earth, with us. They will only be in hell after the second coming.

And really, hell to them, is probably a good thing, if they rejected Christ and want nothing to do with him, a place where God is not present would be like heaven for them.

The absence of God does not mean the absence of pain. Hell is not a good thing even to demons. They are tormented as lost souls are tormented, and it makes sense to me that demons are capable of suffering more intensely than we can.

From a social psychological perspective, it’s a form of social control.

Job 4:18: “In his angels he found wickedness”.

I suppose for some twisted sense of power.
This is a good answer. Demons are blasphemous. They mock the Church and try to imitate in a perverse fashion. I suspect one reason they enter a person’s body to mock the the Holy Spirit.

They hate us. They want to destroy us. If they can’t have that then they want to torture us while they have the chance.

Well, their actual beef is with God himself, but they are not powerful enough to harm him in anyway, so they choose us because we are easy prey for them an they know by harming us, it harms God indirectly.

But then again, Its God who ALLOWS them to do anything and everything they are capable of, so…

If God had wanted, he could have wiped them completely out of existence in an instant when they tried to rebel, but he didnt…instead he cast them down with us, and for good reason, they serve a purpose for him. They are essentially ‘the other choice’, which is necessary in order for us to have free will.
