What is the point of canonizing Saints?

Hello everyone,

I know my question seems a bit blunt but it is something that has been niggling me a lot lately. Why does our Church canonize Saints? We know that everyone who goes to heaven is a saint, and there is no canonized saint that I have a problem with, but I don’t understand why some saints are honoured more than others by our Church. If you take Therese of Lisieux for example, I wholeheartedly agree that she deserves to be united with God for all eternity, and she has been an inspiration to me and to so many people, but surely there are others who have lead similarly Godly lives, who have not been thus honoured.
Again, I don’t have a problem with the concept of saints, I have been helped by them in so many different ways, but I can’t understand why God would want us to honour some people and not others.
Hope I’m making sense,
God Bless,

I think the life of a Saint is a little book of the Gospel.

Each Saint has lived out the Gospel in their own unique way, and they provide us pilgrims still on the journey with excellent role models, examples to follow, in a practical way as we try to emulate them in our own way, not copying them, but seeing how their lives were dedicated to the love of God and neighbor out of love for God in their own unique way.

Some Saints are simply more loved by Catholics. It’s hard to say, for example, why Therese has become so popular. I would say, in part, it is a work of the Holy Spirit. She is a saint for our times. Her Little Way is something we can all try to follow in our daily lives, and she has been known to obtain many special graces for those who implore her intercession and perhaps even miracles.

God wants us to honor all Saints, we just don’t know about most of them. That’s why we celebrate ALL Saints Day. I’m sure we all know someone we would consider a Saint. But the Church is very careful who gets canonized. They are our Spiritual Heroes and a great example for us to emulate. We will meet them all, once we get there. I can hardly wait. God Bless. Memaw
