What is the point of stigmata?

Why would God give stigmata to some saints, for what reason, what do they serve?

The saints who receive this share in Jesus’ suffering. They are often victim souls who, like Jesus, suffer physical pain which they offer in atonement for the sins of humanity.

Stigmata might be seen as a visible sign that Jesus sees the holiness in that person and in their wish to suffer like He did.

To show people that the crucifixion was not a made up story, that yes, Jesus loves us THAT MUCH.

To share in the sufferings of Jesus Christ.
I understand that it is apart of sharing Jesus suffering for the sins of humanity, but I’m interested to know how do you think they effectively help humanity? Will the numbers of sins decrease by stigmata, will God’s mercy on humanity increace?

Padre Pio might answer this. I believe that he prayed to take on the burden of the cross for the sins of humanity. Shortly after doing this, he received the gift of the stigmata. His selfless act saved many souls who found Christ through him. It has been a while since I read about it, but if it is applicable to your question, I am sure someone will clean it up. There are many people here who share a very close affinity for Padre Pio at CA.

So if Padre pio helped more humans come to Jesus through his stigmata, why not much saints get it?

Well, God would know what people in a given time might need. Some times might require more ‘visible’ aids which would get people’s attention. Some times might have so many skeptics that visible aids would actually work ‘against’ turning people’s minds to God.

If God used the same kind of approach all the time, then instead of it being something which draws attention, it would be ho-hum, same old thing.

But it will clear all the debates and beliefs that we have, less sinners, less disbelievers or misbelievers.

Hopefully BOTH. I note also that there are many forms of suffering and offering up that do not involve a person getting the stigmata specifically.

How do you suppose we have any way of answering this? There are things we do not know about how God operates. We leave some things to His wisdom. All we can do is speculate, really.

It is reasonable to believe those who follow the example of Our Lord bear visible evidence of their courage and love. To reject it is a sign of gratuitous cynicism and scepticism…

I’m curious as well when it comes to the palms of the hands…even the Shroud of Turin shows the nails as being through the wrists…I’m not denying those with the stigmata were not genuine…maybe there is a reason for it not being in the wrists

God-given and extraordinary profound edification to the recipient…which profoundly impact the way they edify others.
