What is the point

…of debating Christianity over the internet. That is the question I have been asking myself lately. With no good answer to myself. Perhaps somebody here can provide me a good reason why this is a constructive activity to engage in.

I find it stimulating as I explore my understanding of the faith. Often times the arguments posed are really well thought out and in answering them I go through many sources which broadens me appreciation of the Faith. It has drawn me to the Church more quickly then if I just went through RCIA…

Christianity is a faith is rich in apologetics even in the time of Paul. The difference between Christianity and alot of other faiths is that the historocity of Jesus is very important. It is the core of the faith. Where as in other faiths the key actors may not be that important.

Because, in the course of “…educating yourself”, it will provide topics and questions that you must research for the full truth, in keeping with forming a “right conscience” to guide your life.

Because this is how I really was able to discover Orthodoxy, to which I’ve been attracted lately.

But we all agree on the historical person of Jesus Christ. And there is a whole lot of other stuff we agree on also. So what is the sense of debating?

I guess I can say I have gained something. As I have learned more about Catholicism, my position on a few things has become “more Catholic”. And maybe more important is that even on the areas we disagree on, I have come to the opinion that both the scope and the significance of the disagreement was not as wide as I thought.

So in that respect it has been good.

Although this shifting has come more from reading certain Catholic apologists that I actually like like Jimmy Akin as opposed to the debate that happens here that honestly gets tiring.

I suppose that evangelization is a legitimate purpose.

I have heard as a theme here “come home to Rome”.

Now if I were to “come home” to anything, it would be the Methodist church of my youth. But anyway, for y’all evangelizing of Protestants I suppose is legitimate.

Now I do observe that use of these forums to “evangelize Catholics” is (understandably) forbidden. So if that were my motive, honesty would compel me to find a different venue for this activity.

But as far as I am concerned, I am not the Holy Spirit, and where you choose to fellowhip is His business, not mine.

But maybe evangelization of the assorted nonChristians here would be a legitimate purpose for me.
