What is the proper posture and response when receiving Holy Communion?

:)My little grandaughter recently made her First Communion. I noticed each child say Amen before receiving the host on their tongue. I was always told that to kneel is a sign of respect and that Amen is not necessary. Am I wrong or are the children being told wrong?
