Recently, I have heard my priest say in a homily that the whole purpose of mass is for God and not for our own gain here on Earth and if you’re bored at mass it is okay.

Okay to be bored at Mass!

Would you be happy if I visited your home and sat there bored?

Mass is the most important!

This question just struck me as so odd. To me, the purpose of mass was for me to be in a safe place a place of meditation where the work was done for me to reach God, so that i could speak to him, pray to him, be at peace and to be healed. Was there any more purpose?

The Mass is the unbloody re-presentation of the sacrifice of Jesus at Calvary in which the Priest, acting in persona Christe offers the sacrifice to God the Father. In some mysterious way at the Mass you are transported to the foot of Calvary at that very time and are witnessing the actual event in an unbloody state.

That is the purpose.

First of all mass is not a Sunday service, bible study, or prayer meeting where we sing and study the word of God. Not even close, a mass serves a much higher purpose than that.

A mass is a liturgy that mirrors the liturgy in heaven (you can see this from the book of Revelation how the saints and angels worship God).

It is also believe that the mass unites us with angels and saints in heaven in worshiping the lamb of God.

So, a mass is a divine liturgy, a divine worship.

We go to Mass to be nourished and prepared to go forth into our communities and witness God’s Love through our actions. We thank God for the gifts we have received. We bless the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by being prepared for Mass and being present as a community. We share the blessings we have received during the past week. We learn to live more caring, thoughtful lives.

We experience sanctification as well. We are “washing our robes in the blood (Spirit) of the Lamb” when we go to Mass.

A social & eucharistic gathering that celebrates the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.
I prefer communal to social. We don’t go to Mass to socialize rather we share in the Eucharist.

That kind of disturbs me. Why would I want to be transported to Christ’s death ? That is morbid. If that is truly the case, I might be frightened from church.

It is a celebration of both His death and resurrection. No need to be frightened of something that saves you! Be frightened of that which can do the opposite!

I understand your point Elibrimom. I have told others that I thought many Catholics did not know that some Catholics still believe that the Mass is an action that is intended to mollify an angry God. I cannot imagine our loving Father wanting or needing such an offering. Your response justifies my question.

Quite often a good thought evolves into something much different. Maybe the original Churchman told the Church he was pastoring that the Eucharistic Liturgy is observed by our Father. There is a distinct benefit from having the Father observe our participation during the liturgy. It helps us imagine how the Father had to watch his Son die on the Cross. That thought makes me as sad for the Father as I am about what Jesus had to suffer. It is a motivational experience. But, I don’t only focus on the suffering of the Father and Son because I know that the Eucharistic Liturgy is not one dimensional. Sometimes I think about Emmaus, and how the resurrected Christ was revealed when Jesus broke the bread. Sometimes I am led to reflect on the interaction of Abram and Melchizedek to more fully understand what Jesus wants from us to present as a blessing to our Father. Each of us has a personal relationhip with our Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit guides us during the liturgy to the portion of the meal that will give us nourishment we need.

👍👍👍

To add to that, we go to Mass to prepare for death.

It’s not some happy clappy kumbya social event that so many parishes have turned it in to.

You’ll get plenty of answers to this question with various people telling you what Mass means to them or its theological implications. The Mass is what we call our celebration of Holy Communion. We do it because Jesus commanded us to do so in his memory. I suppose it’s better to be bored by Jesus’s command to remember him in this way, than to ignore it. Anyone who finds the Mass boring should really consider what life is all about.

Can anyone speak more about this?

The mass is the re-presentation of the paschal sacrifice in an un-bloody manner. Notice I don’t say, “representation,” but, “re-presentation.” Christ sacrificed himself once and for all, and during the mass, we are mystically transported to that sacrifice.

What does it mean, in your view, to be “transported to that sacrifice”? What does it entail? What is happening at the place you are transported to?
