What Is the Purpose Of The FSSP?

What difference does the FSSP make?

I am discerning a vocation to the priesthood and I would consider joining the FSSP because I love the EF Sacraments.

However, I have a few questions about the FSSP. What purpose do they serve? I know they celebrate the EF Sacraments, but surely that isn’t all they do?

We need to save the EF Mass and the FSSP are doing this, but what is their real charism? What works do they do? How does the FSSP serve the Church?

Furthermore, Summorum Pontificum has given all priests of the Roman rite permission to celebrate all of the EF Sacraments. Why does the Church need specialist traditionalist Orders like the FSSP?

The Charism of the FSSP is routed in this priestly and liturgical identity and it spurns them on in their Christian mission.Its a bit like asking what’s the point of the dominicans (order of preachers) as every priest can preach.

Yes, but the charism of the Dominicans is the study, contemplation and preaching of the faith. They help the Church to come to a greater understanding and appreciation of the Sacred Deposit of Faith.

The charism of the FSSP, on the other hand, seems concerned only with the promotion of the EF Sacraments.

What are you saying here? That the Sacraments are somehow “better” in the EF than the OF? There is no such thing as an EF or OF Sacrament, only the form in which they are administered are different. A Sacrament is a Sacrament.
The Sacraments are the same whether you receive them according to the EF or OF. You are no less Baptized in the OF than in the EF, and Christ is present Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity whether you receive Him at an OF or EF Mass. You are just as much married in the OF as you are in the EF. God does not make such distinction as your statement implies, and I doubt any FSSP priest would either. The Sacraments are spiritual meat for all, EF or OF. What the FSSP does is preserve the EF, they do not imply the Sacrments are better in one form over the other.

While it is true that a Mass is a Mass, a children’s Mass is equal to a Papal Mass, the catechism does say that the degrees of solemnity may be different. I suppose one can extend this to any sacraments. After all, an atheist could validly baptize and would be just as valid as an EF or OF. But that’s as far as I’m going to take the argument as comparing the EF and OF is against forum rules.

Yeah they do… the traditional forms have spiritual advantages over the newer rites. Listen below to a short talk on the traditional rite of confession by Fr. Rippberger FSSP (penanceware). The relevant part starts at around the 12 minute mark but the whole thing is interesting and worth a listen.

Same for Baptism and most of the other sacraments. Baptism, for example, in the new rite omits the imperative form of exorcism - so new rite: no exorcism. In the old rite you receive an actual exorcism. Same goes for a lot of the sacramentals such as holy water. Depending on the new rite form used your water may not even be blessed at all.
 
The FSSP started the church of the future: the Apostolates. Priest are leaving together, in groups, and either run their own parish, and go to the neighboring villages. Their mission is to present the Traditional Form of Mass, and make it available as widely as possible, but related to one’s vocation it is more important that they are not alone in the priestly life but get help from each other.

Well, if you are going to take that attitude, then you can be sure that the FSSP is not for you.😉

What concerns me is that you seem to follow the secular notion that the liturgical and devotional life of the priesthood is not as important as some of the other “practical” aspects of priestly work. This is precisely why the FSSP was founded, because offering the sacraments is the very purpose of the priesthood. All other reasons, however important, come after that.That is what the FSSP teaches.
