What is the reason for bowing in the Catholic Church?

I am a Xaverian Brother and I do not understand the reason why people bow to symbols of Jesus in church.
 
Dear Brother,

We bow before certain symbols as a public sign of respect for what they represent. For example, we bow to the cross, recalling that the Lord died on a cross because of His love for us.
