What is the reason for not eating meat on Fridays during Lent?

What is the history and reasoning of us (Catholics) not having meat on Fridays during Lent season. I’m a beginner Apologist, so I would like to explain this furthur to inquisitive minds of protestants, as well as brothers and sisters in the Catholic Faith.
