What is the reason the Catholics here view and respond to "Mormon" topic threads?

Annie, I really appreciate you and Bart, because of your realization that bitterness against Mormonism is not justified, that the errors of their doctrines and other literature is the problem, not Mormons as a whole. Their persecution complex should not be fed. They should learn to not take criticism of their beliefs seriously. It is a difficult lesson for those of us who have had a long journey to overcome bitterness.

Catholics as a whole have not examined the deceptions of LDS, and are only now coming to a realization of how far out it is. There is a lot of curiousity about the curiousity which is Mormonism.
Thank you, Jerusha!🙂
Anne

Because I used to be Mormon before I was Catholic. I don’t know near as much about other Christian traditions as I do about Mormonism. I feel like I can discuss it intelligently although Mormons may not agree!
Thank you for your response, Bart!

Annie

no need to be so rude.😦
Annie, it is responses like the one that you are characterizing as “rude” that I was talking about when I said how challenging it can some times be to have a discussion with Mormons when oftentimes one or more important elements are missing ~ knowledge, maturity, and the sense not to personalize every little thing. What you have run into here is the lack of maturity problem.

I suspect that those who post in such a way go off thinking how clever they are. They’re not, and they also reaffirm the conclusion that it is rare, if not impossible, to have a genuine discussion with a Mormon. That’s unfortunate, but we don’t make them behave that way. As they like to say themselves ~ they have their “free agency” ~ which also means they can behave rudely or immaturely if they choose to. And we also have our “free agency” and we can come to mature conclusions about such behavior.

I submit that any cheap rude “shot” is really just a reaction to the discomfort of being unable to given a reasoned reply.

i’m late to the dance i see. (story of my life lol)

I grew up LDS. i was a counselor in the bishopric and a veil worker at the temple when i left. if there are mormons who feel the call to Gods church then I figure some may come here and i especially want to help them in their journey.

Sometimes Catholics are in situations where they have questions about mormons and they ask them HERE instead of an LDS site because either they want answered in catholic terms so that they can understand it better and/or they don’t want the missionary spin, testimony bearing, conversion attempts, etc. I am here to answer their questions.

As a believing catholic, loyal to the magisterium i wish to protect the church from spiritual “wolves”. LDS wannabe missionaries seem to come here trolling for converts. that’s when the “bashing” occurs. like scientologists they try the milk before meat and some even believe the whitewashed, faith promoting, revisionist history that pervades newer LDS teaching materials and thus make it difficult to get a true picture of what’s going on. I jump in to provide the truth when these types begin to propagate inaccurate accounts of LDS doctrine, history, practices, etc. I will not allow LDS to proselytize here unchallenged. just as they teach that we are so apostate as to possess no sacramental grace whatsoever in our church, i believe that they are so deep in heresy as to be spreading spiritual poison with theirs. they have their own sites to preach from to those who actively seek after mormon teachings. this is a catholic site and LDS who seek converts here SHOULD be challenged with the truth. so i come to defend the faith in those situations.
Thank you for your very in-depth reply!

Thanks! And it is “Z” so that is to be expected…

Sometimes.

Zerinus is very confident about his Mormonism. Confidence is fine. Brash arrogance and rudeness is not fine. There can sometimes be a fine line between the two. At CAF we are called to stay on the right side of that line. Not everyone does so.

One of the challenges of discussing various subjects with Mormons is that they have an entirely different understanding of God/the nature of the Godhead. It’s like they’re speaking a foreign language, even tho’ they may use the same words as we do. Every discussion has to start with clear definitions. This is sometimes very difficult.

It seems to me that this also limits their ability, at least in many cases, to engage in thoughtful discussions about the theology of other faiths. For example, there have been various discussions about Real Presence and Transubstantiation. I have yet to see a Mormon be able to distinguish the two, even those who claim to have made an in-depth study of the Catholic faith. And yet, they are distinguishable.

I was just wondering why other Catholics here at CA view and respond to “Mormon” topic threads? It seems that a few are sincerely interested in intelligent exchange, and it also seems that others are here to “bash”…What brings YOU here to the Mormon topics?

Annie
My brother converted from the Catholic faith to the LDS Church. The topic of mormon beliefs interests me, because I want to know what my brother beleives. Sometimes, it is difficult to talk to him about his faith. Often, his answers are evasive and off-putting, like he does not want to share his beliefs. So, I come here to learn what I can about his beliefs from other LDS church members.

Peace,
-Robert

I used to read Mormon books while I was waiting in the dried foods store. I came to understand a lot of their doctrine but don’t understand why they would even believe that Joseph Smith was a reliable prophet. It seemed to me like one of those alleged apparitions of Mary or some saint that the Catholic church would condemn because they have no basis in scripture or sacred tradition and are just bizarre. So I was interested in how modern day Mormons would defend their beliefs.

I suppose Christianity is viewed in a similar way by Jews.

And the other pagans thought Abraham was a crackpot.

Nevertheless, I’m Catholic and believe in Jesus and what the apostles witnessed and passed down about him. At least there was more than one person who lived with him and witnessed his miracles and his very public death and schmoozed with him for well over a month after he came back to life in glowing health.

I think it is important to counter the “milk before meat” approach of Mormons (read: lying) with the in-depth truth about their beliefs and history. Mormons will almost never be up-front about what they really teach and believe, so it is up to us ex-Mormons to inform people. Also, most of the Mormons who post here do not know their faith and especially their church history. We educate them as well.

Remember, for everyone who posts on these forums, there are many lurkers looking for information. I am very concerned that these seekers get the straight scoop on Mormonism, which they certainly will not get from the Mormons.

Which you provide for them free of misunderstanding and malice?

really I suppose a lot of that has to do where where ones perceives truth to be. I’ve found the hostility towards anything LDS to be very common and rarely do any of the none LDS “experts” stand up for what the LDS do believe and teach when another none LDS “expert” is in error.

then i would invite you to look back at earlier posts from before you came here. quite a few here have corrected people who posted inaccurate depictions of LDS teachings, practices, etc.

certainly ones understanding of what they teach is going to determine the perception of accuracy. those who have only been exposed to recent teaching materials may well believe that what is being said is wrong. the absence of a catechism equivalent makes is certainly problematic. however, it is easy to provide verifiable references to any claims made and if you are willing to do a bit of research to confirm what is being said then you should quickly see the facts. you may very well still conclude that the interpretation of those facts is wrong but even then those of us who spent many years as TBM’s know what was taught in church and emphasized in conference and the explanations and clarifications that were given by the GA’s about those subjects in great detail. so the misunderstanding is doubtful and the malice is absolutely absent. we speak the truth because we truly care. i don’t want mormons to burn or suffer in any way. I do not hope they “get what’s coming to them”. i sincerely desire that all go to heaven and enjoy everything God has forever. i denounce their teachings for that purpose.

I will tell you why that is a dumb question. Those “Mormon” topic threads are nearly always started Catholics like you—like this one—not by Mormons. So perhaps you should ask yourself the question—why do you start “Mormon” topics threads? LOL!

zerinus
You took the words right out of my mouth. The mormon topics are usually started by catholics in order to bash mormons. And then when mormons respond, it is claimed that they have a persecution complex. I am still trying to get my head around that one.

Annie came to the forum as a mormon. Now she is an exmormon. All within a couple or so months. It has been quick transformation on her part. If you read her first posts she was defending the lds church. Now suddenly she is a catholic and can’t quite get her head around the fact that the catholics here who post on mormon threads started by catholics do so to discredit the lds church. .

Hi Zerinus,
what difference does it make who starts a thread??
the content of info ( back and forth ) should be what is of value

These discussions could have real benefit to ALL who may run across them.

It would also seem to me that these threads ( that seem to anger you ) should allow you an opportunity to voice your beliefs with countless christians)

God bless
Carl
Because Annie implied differently. She seemed to think that the mormon threads were started by mormons when in fact, they are more often than not started by catholics looking to bash the lds church. Zerinus defends his faith and acts accordingly to the spirit of the catholic posts which can be quite harsh toward mormonism.

Yes he does. Which is more than can be said about many of the LDS who post here.
I see very few rude lds here. Most are kind and considerate considering the antimormon feeling of the section. Be kind to the mormons who post here, respect their religion, and they will show kindness to all. But like I said, most are polite and considerate considering the anti flavor of the section.
