What is the reason the Catholics here view and respond to "Mormon" topic threads?

really I suppose a lot of that has to do where where ones perceives truth to be. I’ve found the hostility towards anything LDS to be very common and rarely do any of the none LDS “experts” stand up for what the LDS do believe and teach when another none LDS “expert” is in error.
True enough. But I do believe that the catholics here who are antilds just can’t help themselves. They certainly do not show the catholic understanding of brotherhood and sisterhood. But the catholics who I have met are very much different from the ones who post here. Most are going about their own life without anti feeling toward mormons or any other religious group.

I see very few rude lds here. Most are kind and considerate considering the antimormon feeling of the section. Be kind to the mormons who post here, respect their religion, and they will show kindness to all. But like I said, most are polite and considerate considering the anti flavor of the section.
It is a great kindness and love for a fellow human being to help them free themselves from error and deceit. Those of us who engage in doing so are not being disrespectful or impolite, but we are going to tell the Truth as we are called to do. It would be inaccurate to describe those that tell the Truth as being mean, disrespectful, rude, impolite, uncaring, or anti-ANYTHING.

Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, some Mormons come to a Catholic Forum and post messages about their faith and when challenged to support their assertions, fail to do so and then turn around and find fault with those whose only “sin” was to ask them to establish the facts of one thing or another. It is, of course, their choice to personalize such an episode, but it is not mean or disrespectful or anything bad to challenge someone to support their assertions.

If Mormonism is true, it should be something that can withstand a challenge. If Mormonism is true, the origins of the faith should not be something that has to be hidden. When Mormons are asked about the foundations of their religion, it is not a personal attack, but if there is no reasonable basis for their faith, it may be something that causes them to reflect on the Truth.

Because Annie implied differently. She seemed to think that the mormon threads were started by mormons when in fact, they are more often than not started by catholics looking to bash the lds church. Zerinus defends his faith and acts accordingly to the spirit of the catholic posts which can be quite harsh toward mormonism.
Hi why me,
First, thanks for your response.
Please allow me to try and explain where I am coming from.
The biggest reason I have joined this site( just did a couple days ago ) Is to try and get a flavor of where my brothers and sisters in Christ are grounded. I have very little ( other than street rumor )experience with any of the " protestant " faiths. I was hoping to try and have some back and forth ( respectfully and lovingly ) and my first few experiences on here seem to have alot of personal attacks and the " my way is better than your way " comments.

In my personal journey, I have landed in the Catholic Church, for several reasons.

My choice does not take away the desire I have to try and undersatnd and become more educated as to where and why my protestant brethren have chosen what they have.

Thanks for your ear,
God bless,
Carl

Do you have an answer to the OP’s question: “why other Catholics here at CA view and respond to “Mormon” topic threads?” If so, what is your answer to her question? That is where you want to start if you want to respond to this thread.

Well said. 👍

Having been Catholic, I sometimes need to tell myself that the Catholic church is not the same as the CAF. I doubt most Catholics would even know the difference between the Real Presence and Transubstantiation. And they’re more literate. And they love to debate. A lot!

I suppose now we need to start, “What is the reason that (TB) Mormons view and respond to “Mormon” topic threads?”

zerinus
and who put you in charge in of the thread? anyone is free to respond as they choose. as the thread is about catholics viewing and responding to mormon threads here, anticatholic mormons such as whyme and yourself really aren’t in a position to contribute in a positive manner.

Hello Zerinus,

I can certainly answer your question ( for myself )
I , as a Catholic , view and respond to Mormon topic ( and all other denomination ) threads because I have a desire to try and understand where and why they have chosen their branch.

I guess the best place, in my opinion, to learn and digest other beliefs, is to have a dialougue directly with the source.

I hope this answers your question.

Can you now answer my original question to you ???
What difference does it make who starts a thread ???

God bless,
Carl

Aww, come on Majick, no one here is anti-Catholic. Heck, we love Catholics. Really.

actually i believe that YOU are not anti anything and that you do in fact love catholics.(not just catholics either) however zerinus and whyme have both demonstrated a strong anticatholic attack here consistently. teancum79 is a missionary who came trolling for converts. i don’t consider him anticatholic. just misguided.

It’s kind of comical, really, when someone comes into a public forum under false pretenses (such as trolling for converts but pretending to want to discuss some theological point or another) and then, when they bump into people who sometimes know more about their faith than even THEY do, and challenge them on it, they come away shocked and offended about how “mean” those awful Catholics are. Gosh, what about the pretense? Why aren’t they shocked and offended at THAT? 🤷

That was not my question. That was the OP’s question. You want to see if she is satisfied with that question, not me.

Thank you; I agree. That is a good reason for wanting to respond to a Mormon related thread.

Generally nothing. However, it makes a lot of difference if you look at it from the point of view of the OP’s original question. The OP’s original question implied that Catholics should not reply to Mormon-related threads, because Mormons are not interested in their answers. The implication behind that was that Mormon-related threads are started by Mormons for reasons other than getting honest answers from Catholics. However, the real story is that 19 times out of 20 Mormon-related threads are started by Catholics with the intent of bashing Mormonism; and Catholics who respond to those threads mostly do so with that purpose in mind, rather than for any other reason. That makes the OP’s question a very dumb question.

How fascinating that you actually know the thoughts and motives of others, that is a special gift. Most of us can only guess at the thoughts and motives of others and an assertion such as “Catholics who respond to those threads mostly do so with that purpose in mind” would be conjecture, at best.

How is it that you have the ability to see into the hearts and minds of others when the rest of us mere mortals cannot do so? I know that God can do that, how can you? You’re not God.

Zerinus,
Thank you for your responses,
I think I have a better understanding of where you were coming from.
My point was, who cares who brought the ball to the park, Do you want to have a friendly came of catch. who knows we all might get something out of it.

God bless,

You took the words right out of my mouth. The mormon topics are usually started by catholics in order to bash mormons. And then when mormons respond, it is claimed that they have a persecution complex. I am still trying to get my head around that one.
This is just so funny, you’ve made this comment about Catholics starting LDS threads before. This was at a time when just under half of the LDS threads on the first 2 pages were stated by…you.

Annie came to the forum as a mormon. Now she is an exmormon**. All within a couple or so months. It has been quick transformation on her part. If you read her first posts she was defending the lds church. Now suddenly she is a catholic and can’t quite get her head around the fact that the catholics here who post on mormon threads started by catholics do so to discredit the lds church. .
Well you’re still here claiming Catholic all the while insulting Catholics calling them drunks, un-christian and so on. And at the same time misrepresenting Catholic doctrine, making it up as you go along in order to encourage those here to accept LDS beliefs as something wholly compatible with Catholic doctrine.

First of all, you don’t need to be a mind reader to see through the intent of the OP’s original question. That is plain enough to everyone who reads it carefully enough.

As for others who respond to the threads, it is often possible to tell if the poster is making an honest inquiry, or just Mormon bashing. Of course, it is possible for someone to be making an honest inquiry under the guise of a critical post. But after a while you get to know the people who post here well enough to know which ones are inherently hostile, and what to expect from them; and who may be making an honest inquiry under the guise of a critical post.

Generally speaking, I agree. But I believe my response was appropriate to the OP’s original question. It was addressed to her, and her specific question, and what it implied; not to you.

Of the approximately four LDS posters, McMullin and Teancum seem to be quite decent.

Zerinus and Why Me seem to be adept at getting offensive. Their posts misrepresent LDS history and doctrine, and twist Catholic history and doctrine into what it is not. Therefore, when we respond in defense of our faith, they whine and complain of anti-Mormonism, when, in fact they are anti-Catholic.

Their games on this board have done the Catholic Church a great service in acquainting Catholics with Mormon creative logic. :tiphat: And therefore Mormon-proofing them. Thank you.

As for the OP, I think the answer is that everyone has a different story as to why they are interested in the subject. I usually keep my reason to myself, since it :banghead: is a major Mormon secret, and the decent ones are :o embarassed about it. Others, like Zerinus and Why Me, lie about it, and become angry when it is exposed.

So maybe Zerinus and Why Me are angry at the OP for asking the question? 🤷

Hmmm … I count six regular or semi-regular LDS posters, and I have a very different perception of Teancum.

Teancum - argumentative and obstinate, often speaks in derogatory and/or blasphemous terms about mainstream Christian beliefs
Alma - polite, respectful, very knowledgeable about LDS history although very hesitant to acknowledge its many inconsistencies and problems
Paul G - see Alma
rmcmullin - see Alma
zerinus - see Teancum
why me - see Teancum, with the added issue that s/he pretends to be Catholic

Many of the most contentious LDS threads have been started by why me or teancum, so it is very funny to see Why Me griping about how Catholics are always starting threads to “bash” the Mormons.

Better and ex-Mormon than an ex-Catholic:thumbsup: 😃
