What is the reason the Catholics here view and respond to "Mormon" topic threads?

First of all, you don’t need to be a mind reader to see through the intent of the OP’s original question. That is plain enough to everyone who reads it carefully enough.

As for others who respond to the threads, it is often possible to tell if the poster is making an honest inquiry, or just Mormon bashing. Of course, it is possible for someone to be making an honest inquiry under the guise of a critical post. But after a while you get to know the people who post here well enough to know which ones are inherently hostile, and what to expect from them; and who may be making an honest inquiry under the guise of a critical post.

So you don’t actually KNOW whether your assertion about “Catholics who respond to those threads mostly do so with that purpose in mind” is true, you’re just guessing.

It’s helpful to have that clarified.

I like talking to zerinus. I enjoy his presence on here. I doubt he’ll say the same about me 😛

Hmmm … I count six regular or semi-regular LDS posters, and I have a very different perception of Teancum.

Teancum - argumentative and obstinate, often speaks in derogatory and/or blasphemous terms about mainstream Christian beliefs
Alma - polite, respectful, very knowledgeable about LDS history although very hesitant to acknowledge its many inconsistencies and problems
Paul G - see Alma
rmcmullin - see Alma
zerinus - see Teancum
why me - see Teancum, with the added issue that s/he pretends to be Catholic

Many of the most contentious LDS threads have been started by why me or teancum, so it is very funny to see Why Me griping about how Catholics are always starting threads to “bash” the Mormons.
teancum tends to throw out unfounded allegations and rarely presents evidence. however that is pretty common with mormons. while he can get pretty quick i think for the most part teancum isn’t that bad. i still have hope for him. 🙂

i agree with you on alma147, Paul G and rmcmullin

zerinus is deliberately provocative and obnoxious, constantly misrepresents LDS history, doctrine and practices but appears to be quite young and thus hasn’t personally experienced much of the mormon “deep doctrine”

whyme is as exactly as you said. i would add his annoying attempts at thread swarming though. he loves to whine of the LDS boards for allies to come here and bash the “antimormons” (defined as anyone who claims that LDS teaching is wrong or that Joseph smith wasn’t a true prophet)

i agree that many LDS threads here are started by missionary trolls

It’s preferable to discuss modes of behaviors, concepts, discussion points, etc. and not individuals.

I submit that it is inappropriate for anyone to perform an analysis of different forum members on an individual basis no matter what faith they are.

Challenge people on what they post, that is right. Discuss topics. But to analyze anyone ~ saying they are some way or another ~ whatever that might be ~ is not our place. We don’t know their hearts and minds and it is not for us to analyze them, it’s too much like judging.

You’re right, MelanieAnne. I shouldn’t have done that. If I could go back and edit it, I would, but since I can’t, let me apologize.

I will tell you why that is a dumb question. Those “Mormon” topic threads are nearly always started Catholics like you—like this one—not by Mormons. So perhaps you should ask yourself the question—why do you start “Mormon” topics threads? LOL!

zerinus
Maybe you should take your own advice, and answer the OPs question. Oh wait, you can’t, because you’re not a Catholic.

So instead, you tell the OP what the question “should” have been.

No purpose to that other than to stir things up.

Better and ex-Mormon than an ex-Catholic:thumbsup: 😃
I have no problem with you there. But you came to the forum as a mormon defending the lds faith. And now suddenly you are catholic. That must have been the shortest RCIA classes ever. How did you manage it so quickly?

Unless of course, you misrepresented yourself in the beginning. Will you still defend the lds faith?

So maybe Zerinus and Why Me are angry at the OP for asking the question? 🤷
No, I am just trying to figure Annie out. Go back and read her first posts defending the lds faith in December and January. Now suddenly she is an ex mormon who does not have a temple recommend.

I just can’t figure her out.

Excuse me, but if you want to read Annie’s story it is very simple. Go to her profile and select “see all member’s posts.” A little while back, she posted a thread announcing her return, yes return, to the Catholic church. I must say that it is extremely distasteful to see you demand answers from her like you are some Grand Mormon Inquisitor.

I was just wondering why other Catholics here at CA view and respond to “Mormon” topic threads? It seems that a few are sincerely interested in intelligent exchange, and it also seems that others are here to “bash”…What brings YOU here to the Mormon topics?

Annie
because we assume anyone posting on a Catholic forum is soliciting reactions and opinions from Catholics

You assumed I went through RCIA…and you know what “assume” means;) . If you know me so well from my posts, you would also know that I was raised Catholic, became Mormon after a huge crisis in my life, and have recently returned to the Catholic church. In a situation such as mine, all that was needed was confession, convalidation and I was “home”. As far as defending the LDS faith, I no longer defend it specifically, but I do defend everyone’s right to believe what they want. Freedom of religion gives me the right to be Catholic so I will defend that freedom to the death - for everyone!

Many here are equally puzzled by those who claim they are Catholic while all of their posts promote and defend LDS beliefs and practice. Not to mention the endless extolling of the virtues of the members of the LDS church and how it is just not possible for them to behave badly.

See my reply to “why me”. Maybe then you will not be so puzzled. If you did a little research on your own, you could have been puzzle-free:D

Well I’m not puzzled by you and I did read your response to Whyme. He says he’s puzzled by your former defending of LDS and your current lack of it. I meant to show his behavior is at least as puzzling as he claims yours is.

sorry - I misunderstood your post:o

I missed Alma and Paul. However, they don’t post that often. Again, decent types.

I think it is better to discuss our perceptions in the open, rather than in personal messages. That kind of backstabbing is much worse. At least they get some feedback. We don’t want to give them the perception that we treat WhyMe and Zerinus, (and to some extent Teancum) the way we do because they are LDS, and that therefore we will treat all LDS like that. With WM’s & Z’s whining, other LDS newbies might get that opinion.

I like Teancum because he is relatively open-minded on the Nephite~Viking subject.

I like you too! You are one of the good guys round here. 😉
