I’m pretty sure you’ve notice this phenomenon described in this picture:

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

What is the reason for this?

I mean haven’t you seen some woman post what she’s having for dinner on facebook and get like 1,000 likes but a man post something like how he just discovered the cure for cancer and get like 2 likes (I’m exaggerating, but you get my point).

It’s annoying.

No, I’m pretty sure I haven’t.

Before attempting to find a “reason” for this, I think first it would have to be empirically proven to be factual. Anecdotal evidence is not factual. It’s a joke.
It’s annoying.
Why would this be annoying??? Perhaps one should examine whether or not there is an unhealthy attachment to Facebook or an unhealthy need for attention if this is actually troublesome in someone’s world.

Why do women go to the bathroom in groups? It is because for many women (although not all, by any means!!) social interaction with other women and a woman’s place in a social circle with other women is the coin of the realm. I don’t know if you’re seeing something real with the FB thing, but if you’re going to get jealous because women communicate with each other differently and far more often than they communicate with you, the man in their life, you are in for a long, bitter life.

Giving and receiving “likes,” whether on FB or elsewhere, is all well and good, but being in a competition with anyone else for “likes” is not a life to be envied. It is a social hell; it is a treadmill; it is a rat race. It is middle school at its worst. Be glad you are not there any more!!

(BTW: Who on earth posts their cure for cancer on Facebook? Did it occur to you that cancer researchers do not let their lives revolve around Facebook “likes”? They cover the cover of Science or Nature, not “likes” from their far-flung acquaintances who just want to know what everyone has been doing on their family vacations.)

BTW, I hope I am wrong, but you are beginning to seem like a very high-maintenance date, and not the kind of high-maintenance that women tend to tolerate very well.

Maybe you save all your venting for us, so that you can be beaten down by people who don’t even know you, while letting those who actually see you in person admire you for your unflappable roll-with-the-punches good humor and your unusual lack of self-interest. That would be a wise choice on your part!

Thanks Monicad!

Really I just joined facebook, and I’m currently checking it often because some family member’s health isn’t good in another country. I think I’m getting a hang of it, getting a feel for the atmosphere.

I don’t see myself staying long though, I’ll probably fall off the wagon, the whole 50 likes for what I have for dinner thing or just the general love fest for my first world problems is very annoying to me. But it has its novelty right now…

Eh, while it’s probably true women get more attention than men on facebook, the extra generally a particularly desirable sort of attention. I’ve had my share of…interesting…requests/messages of a sort men don’t generally get.

My husband has a lot more “friends” on facebook then I do and most of the comments I get on my posts are from his “friends”. I ask, “Who the heck is _________?” and he says, “Someone I worked with in college.” 🤷 I use facebook to communicate with people I want to talk to. (Mostly share photos of my baby.) I don’t feel the need to almenac my weekly menus and clothing choices. I don’t require or even desire constant affirmation on every detail of my life. I don’t think that sort of thing is very healthy either.

** In the old pre-technology days, it would have been almost impossible to replicate Facebook and Twitter. The closest you could get would be to mail dozens of postcards a day to everybody you knew, each with a brief message about yourself like: ‘Finally got that haircut I’ve been putting off.’ Or: ‘Just had a caramel frappuccino. Yum!’ The people receiving these postcards would have naturally assumed that you were a moron with a narcissism disorder. But today, thanks to Facebook and Twitter, you are seen as a person engaging in ‘social networking.’**

Falling off this wagon would be a very wise thing to do…

Personally speaking, I joined Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. People I have friended are people who I already met in real life.

I couldn’t care less about getting likes.

Generally, yes. I think part of the rising importance to young people is that many of us have less physical stability. For a student like me, unmarried, going BA to MA to PhD and then probably a string of temp jobs, how many years will it be before I get to stay in one place? Online relationships help keep a bit more stability around.

I think in general that women reinforce each other with Likes, comments, and other ways.

Women are more consistent in their use of Facebook. :o

I agree with that. I also think that it makes the world a bit smaller. I’ve been able to stay connected to every foreign exchange student that went to my high school, every friend I made during my semester in Europe, and every teacher and professor that really impacted or inspired me in high school and college. Even though I don’t interact much with these people even on Facebook, I often see their posts and I learn even more about their nation’s culture and politics.

Facebook is **social **media.

Women are generally more **social **than are men.

Mystery solved. 😉

If this thread takes off, just know I tried to delete it, but then I realized you can’t delete OPs.

I have noticed this (And I barely spend time on facebook), and yes it is annoying. My explanation: there are many people out there who post up “certain posts” seeking attention, which only results in desperate, stalker types actually responding and creating such a phenomenon.

Of course, this does not apply to everyone: which is why many posters here have not observed it before. Most people are unaware of the darker side of the internet (It’s alot more than just porn).

I am a woman. I tried Facebook, and I’d get NO likes to a point I got off it for a long time, wondering why I’d bother.

Women have been known to go to others in all kinds of circumstances.

Well, if you have a man with a problem, he may keep the problem to himself, compartmentalizing it. Men often separate areas of their lives.

Women, on the other hand, tend more frequently to go to others to ask for (name removed by moderator)ut in problem solving, and look for info, reassurances, that men often just don’t do.

It’s hard with men’s posts, since they can be quite brief.

I write my brothers. Often they don’t write back. IF they write back, it is often just a short sentence or a WORD! There’s not much meat for me from, say, “Good”!

They are into the “bottom line”.

One of my brothers was commenting on that. He said someone did a study on the length of time men speak to their families, say, on the phone, as opposed to women. Women will often spend, on average, 30 min./call with family. Men spend more like…30 sec! lol

Some men will surprise me, though, but they are more the exception.

I think on Facebook, people look for people who are into the same interests. Often, much of it, to me, can come across as quite superficial.

Went for smoothie…

got back…

THAT will get “likes”!

I will put something more profound, and nobody will care!

So, don’t overestimate the …I was going to say “intelligence”, but that isn’t the word, either.

Okay, think of it this way. There will be some epic, classic movies, that, to me, should be popular. NO! It will be some ridiculous, superficial thing, that I can’t believe people actually spent money to see!

Especially in this day and age, don’t worry so much about being popular. Look at who is popular…Lady Gaga?!

Yeah, people like her probably get a lot of “likes”, but would you like to imitate her?

If that’s what I need to do to be popular, I’d rather be UNpopular!

As to women…I have noticed you have posted post after post about women. I am coming to the conclusion there’s something there.

Well, one post will ask why women are “cold” when they break up. Another will ask why they string men along. Another will ask why women get all the “Likes” on FaceBook. There appears to be a recurring motif, here.

Even if you had one…even more, bad experiences with women, doesn’t mean they’re all bad. Also, I don’t think women have it really inherently better than men, either. Both have hard roads.

Even if it were true that women did get more attention, so what? Who cares?

I saw a bumpersticker that said, “Less ‘FACE’ (What Facebook is often referred to as here in Mexico), and more book!” 😉
