What is the relationship between the so-called "American Catholic Church" and the Roman Catholic Church?

A colleague claims to be a Catholic and says she belongs to the American Catholic Church. When I stated that there is no such thing, she vehemently responded, telling me she was a Catholic and she new her faith. This discussion arose when a group of us were discussing the circumstances under which the discipline of celibacy could be waived for a Catholic Priest.
 
The American Catholic Church in the United States (or ACCUS) is a church that is in schism from the Roman Catholic Church. Their clergy are validly ordained. However, because their clergy are not in union with the Roman Catholic Church and do not have faculties, Catholics cannot fulfill the following in the ACCUS:
  1. fulfill Sunday or holy day obligation
  2. validly marry
  3. validly have their sins absolved
