What is the scoop on St. Mary Magdalen?

What is the official Church teaching on legends or stories that surround the early saints or Church Fathers and Apostles? I am referring to the stories or traditions of the deaths of St. Peter and St. Paul and/or St. Mary Magdalene. I know there are different versions, for instance, of what happenned to St. Mary Magdalene - how are these stories regarded by the Church?

Oh, and is there a good, solid, official place to go to find out about the deaths or final resting places of the saints?
