What is the significance of First Friday?

The First Friday of September is just a few days away. As a Catholic who is trying to grow in faith, I plan on attending mass on Friday. However, despite my 12 years of Catholic education, I can’t recall what makes the first Friday of every month special? Is it a reminder to get to monthly confession? Do I go to confession on First Friday, or the Thursday before?

All I know that it has to do with a devotion to the Sacred Heart. Prior to St. Margaret, I’m not sure if first Fridays were special. Here’s a link that explains more:
