There is no great significance other than placing the crucifixion of Our Lord in a historical context. Some groups claim that Jesus was never really crucified. Other groups claim that the crucifixion narrative is some sort of symbolic myth. By affirming that Jesus was “crucified under Pontius Pilate” we are stating our belief that this was a real historical event that truly physically happened.
