I have read several articles, here and elsewhere, saying that there are more than 30,000 sects of Protestantism.

Now I need to defend that number in a discussion with an anti-Catholic.

Can anyone tell me the source? Or where I can look it up? I’ve been searching my books and the 'net for 2 days with no luck, so far.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve seen that number fairly well refuted in a thread on these forums many months ago. You might try to search for it somehow. I think the poster who argued against it was “michael p” who I haven’t seen around in quite a while. At any rate, I think the source from which the number of 30,000 Protestant denominations originally stems has some odd classification system which also results in dozens of denominations within the Catholic Church. I would say, don’t bother defending the 30,000. Just try to find out how many denominations operate in the United States, which should be sufficiently high to make a point with, since the rest of the world has denominations not represented in the I’m sure already high totals of the U.S. denominations.

Hi Ruthie, next time you are at the public library look up a copy of Mead’s Handbook of Demoninations. Rather than throwing numbers around simply list what is called denominational distinctives.

Catholic Dude:
Thanks.

That is a good article by “Itsjustdave1988” (who posts in here all the time). For those who dont know it is also listed on the third link above
Thank you. That was nice of Phil to put it on his webpage. 🙂
