What is the status of the Society of St. Pius X?

I am a practical Catholic and I am confused as to the position of the Church on the attendence, participation at/in the Mass and recieving communion at a Society of St. Pius X Church or Chapel?

Also are the Society St. Pius X Bishops and Priests considered validly ordained and recognized by the Catholic Church as such?
