I live about 50 miles from the nearest big city. I have a local parish that celebrates the Mass of Pope Paul VI. However, I sometimes drive 50 miles to attend the Tridentine Rite Indult. However, I was born into and Raised on the Byzantine Rite. However, the nearest city (50 miles) has a Byzantine community which infrequently hold a byzantine liturgy in a chapel at Catholic high school on Sunday nights. I discovered today that a Cathedral in the same city has the
Syro-Malabar Rite every Sunday afternoon. My question is what is this rite and is there any similaries with it to Byzantine Liturgy or other Eastern Catholic rites.

The Syro-Malabar Rite is one of the liturgies of the twenty three Eastern Churches as is the Byzantine. I would have to go to the office and pull a few books to go any further into the history of the Rite and liturgy. As a Catholic you can attend any of the Eastern liturgies! Go visit!

The Syro-Malabar Rite developed in India. St. Thomas the Apostle (“Doubting Thomas”) went to India and established the Church there. I believed he was martyred there, too. The word Syro-Malabar comes from: Syro from the Syriac language and Malabar from a geographic region. It’s a fascinating history and well worth the time to search it on the Web. There’s plenty of resources including official Syro-Malabar church sites.

Thanks everyone for the info. I plan to check out hopefully this weekend or very soon. I know this sounds like a stupid question but
Am I correct in assuming the liturgy will be in English as byzantine liturgy is?

I have attended a few Eastern liturgies and they have not always been in English. But you can easily tell what is going on by the actions.
