What is the tradition of changing names upon receiving the Mystery of Holy Ordination in the East?

I know there isn’t really one in the West, at least for diocesan priests. Yet, I was still wondering if there is a tradition of doing this in the East amongst the diocesan clergy. Should I become a priest in the Maronite Church (insha’ allah), I would like to change my name and these are a few of the names I like. Let me know what you all think:

  1. *]Yaqoub Elias
    *]Yaqoub Athanasios
    *]Elias Maroun
    *]Efrem Maroun

Anyways, do diocesan clergy in the East have such a tradition, or is it just once and a while occurences where these things happen? And if they do it, what procedure do they have to go through?

  1. Andrew you would do well to speak with your Maronite bishop.

The Antiochians have a tradition of secular clergy taking new presbyteral names… I am not familir with it elsewhere.

    Are you in seminary now?

It’s not only in the Eastern tradition. We have a man who was ordained into the Passionist Missionaries and he changed his first name, kept his last. Another priest who is a Claretian missionary did the same thing…and they are of the Roman Rite.

I’m not in the Seminary yet. My pastor wants me to wait 2 years until I get a basic 2 year degree at a college.

That is more likely connected to him being a religious and not him being a priest. It is the tradition in the west for religious to change names, though a lot do not any more.
