What is the truth behind Roe vs Wade?

I was told that the law for Roe vs Wade was established to protect the mother who aborted her child from being tried for murder and sentence to jail time? Is this the truth or is there more to the story. Is there a reliable source or documents I can read that aren’t slanted?
