In Mathew 22:12 Jesus gives the story of the great wedding feast in Heaven…where one guy got in without a wedding garment…and was thus cast out into hell (?). What do you think is the “wedding garment”?

A modern example of wearing the wrong clothes is the Vatican! visitors are expected to wear modest clothes, and if they don’t, are not allowed in, or asked to leave.

What the wedding garment (the right clothes, as it were) actually represents is, I believe, acknowledging Jesus as the Christ and the Son of God. The reason I think so is what’s right above it: Mt. 21:33-43.
"Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. 34 When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; 35 and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.
37 Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son.' 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures:
`The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it.”
Matt 21:33-43 (RSV)

  • [22:10] Bad and good alike: cf. Mt 13:47.
  • [22:11] A wedding garment: the repentance, change of heart and mind, that is the condition for entrance into the kingdom (Mt 3:2; 4:17) must be continued in a life of good deeds (Mt 7:21–23).
  • [22:13] Wailing and grinding of teeth: the Christian who lacks the wedding garment of good deeds will suffer the same fate as those Jews who have rejected Jesus; see note on Mt 8:11–12.
Peace

You make a good case for the wedding garment=acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Thank you

St Paul also talks of being clothed with various kinds of virtue. “Virtus” is Latin for “power”.

If God is Perfect then He is clothed with Perfect Virtue. What “perfect” virtues are available to us poor, limited beings…?

Here’s one…“To consider Wisdom is the perfection of Prudence”
Here’s another…“there is no greater Love than to lay down one’s life for his friends”
Here’s some more…Trust in God…Hope in God…Faith in God

Therefore, if God is clothed in Perfect Virtue…then the only clothing available to us would also have to be “perfect”. But…it is not possible for a limited creature to be Perfectly Just or Perfectly Merciful…etc. It is possible for God to cloth us (at times) in perfect Obedience…Trust…Faith…Prudence…etc.

I think we have here is a case of ‘idiomatic drift’ over the centuries.

2000 years ago this would have been more viscerally understood, but essentially, as has already been stated, it means taking on the belief in Christ and ‘wearing’ it in a metaphorical sense. Wrapping oneself in one’s faith, so to speak.

Sounds comfy!

Yes…God is Perfect Virtue…(“virtus” in Latin means “power”)

Please note the EXTROVERTED and RECESSIVE nature of Virtue. God has Perfect Justice and outward Strengths (extroverted)…God also in capable of Perfect Mercy (introverted or recessive)…Thus “God made them male and female, in His own image He made them”.

Notice too, that the Virtues of Justice/Strength seems to be hierarchical…that is “over” Restraint/Mercy…(yet all virtues are part of Virtue–God is One)…This apparent hierarchy God explains to us as a Father/Son relationship.

Notice also…The Holy Spirit can be seen in this Oneness of Virtue…because there are Virtues that seem to actualize with creation…Trust, Obedience, Faith, Love, Hope…that are accessible to us.

Perhaps…Jesus never said that someone was saved because they were good…but that they had taken on the “wedding garment” of Faith from the Holy Spirit?

When Adam and Eve committed their sin, their act of disobedience of God by eating of the fruit, they immediately realized they were naked. Before that they didn’t know they were naked, because they weren’t! What caused their nakedness after disobeying Gods will is that they immediately lost the justice of God, His grace, His righteousness. They now stood naked, cloaked only in their own, so-called righteousness, which, come to find out, is no righteousness at all, because man was never meant to be separated from the righteousness of God. Only when the Holy Spirit is given reign within man to live through us is mans integrity restored, is he covered in true righteousness. This is the purpose of the New Covenant, where God becomes the God of man again, and proceeds to place His Laws on our hearts and write them in our minds.

**I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10

12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience Col 3:12

I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Rev 3:18**

The wedding garment is also baptism.

Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. (Revelation 22:14)

The early Church used to call baptism the “Washing of regeneration.”

You can’t get into the wedding feast without the garment of baptism.

Yes…baptism…thank you! In a certain sense then, repentence/sacramental confession is a washing of our robes…but the robe from Baptism.
