What is the weirdest movie you ever saw?

You may define weird any way you like.

For me, it has to be “The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover” (1989). People were literally leaving the theater as the film progressed because it was so disgusting as well as weird. I forced myself to see it through to the end. It was not without certain artistic merits but definitely not for the faint of heart or for those easily offended by, let us say, unsightly scenes.

A runner-up is a film called “After Hours” (1985), which is a black comedy about a bored office worker who is looking for a little excitement after work in the SoHo district of New York City, and gets way more than he bargained for. This film too has a certain artistry combined with its bleak atmosphere and far-fetched situations.

What are your favorite weird films?
 
I guess this one has cult status now, but I saw a movie in college about aliens invading Earth and using consumerism to take over. Kind of like the Matrix, but involving 80s hair. Instead of a pill, you could wear special glasses to see the “real world” instead of the advertisements.

Ah, here it is: They Live (1988). Seems like reception was actually pretty positive when the film came out, but I just thought it was astonishingly awkward and weird. But maybe I’m too young?
 
I managed a movie theatre for years, so I’ve seen the gamut.

Part of the gig was on Thursday nights you got to preview the new releases that were to open the next day. Sure it was great to get paid to watch a movie (even at 2am), but sometimes it wasn’t enough.

First film I ever walked out of was Love Happens. It was melancholy, depressing, and nothing made sense. It wasn’t a story that needed to be filmed at made. Total garbage. A close runner up though would be FearDotCom.
 
Pink Flamingos was pretty bizarre. Also, it’s not appropriate for kids. Or anyone, really.

You can get a restored version of Manos: The Hand of Fate. That one was terrible AND weird.

Anything by Ed Wood?

Automata with Antonio Banderas was super weird too.

It’s been a long time since I saw it, but Crimen Ferpecto stands out in my mind. I don’t think I’d watch it today, for various reasons. 🙂

Also—and this may just be because I’m a Philistine—but I never “got” 2001: A Space Odyssey. My memory of the film is that it was pretty weird, and I’m sure my wife had the same impression.

Reading the synopsis of Crimen Ferpecto, it sounds like just the kind of bizarre movie I might be interested in seeing.

That is an amazing b-movie. “Put on the **** glasses!”

Another weird movie is Fantastic Planet. It’s an animated movie where giant aliens keep humans as pets.
 
Probably Eraserhead. But Rubber is pretty ridiculous, though. It’s a movie about a killer tire.

Whaaaaat??? That’s one of my all time favorites! I liked Princess Mononoke a bit more though, I think.

For me, Tideland was the weirdest movie I’ve seen in quite a while. It was… disturbing on several different levels. My best friend and I watch bad or just weird movies whenever we hang out together. Usually they’re awful, either in quality or just as an approach to the subject matter. Every now and then we accidentally watch a really good movie though.

The Room and Troll 2 are probably the other two weirdest ones that I haven’t blocked from my memory.

I saw Troll 2 at a very young age (elementary school, I have no idea what the circumstances were) and I still have nightmares about it from time to time. :o

Maybe I’ll have to give it another shot. I was deep into my “I’m too cool and sophisticated for this” phase then, so maybe now that I’ve loosened up a bit I’d let myself like it. 😉

I don’t want to retread over old ground, but if you don’t see it before you retire, you may be missing out on a good year.

🙂 It is good, but the first time I watched it I couldn’t stop thinking “what on earth is this?”

Not to turn this thread into obvious evidence of my bad taste, but I also thought *Ponyo *was pretty weird.

I know lots of folks love the film, including my wife, but “Whaaaaat???” was basically all I was thinking throughout the movie. 😛
