The worst book I ever read has to be Clockwork Orange. There is no way to feel any compassion for the protaganist.
Hmmm, never read the book, seen the movie (ecch - ruined Beethoven’s beautiful music for me forever).

I don’t imagine you’re meant to feel any compassion for the protagonist, really - to me the ending at least comes across more like a social commentary on the role that crime and criminals play in society, and the idea that in completely rooting out all possiblity of wrongdoing from a person you’re really stripping them of their humanity.

No longer. 😦 Calvinists can still write - Anglicans & Catholics are the folk who seem unable to 😦

typical of anti-Catholics to not only attack the Church and Her teachings but the intelligence and (etc) of Her members…

Catholic writers are great… usually very understandable… etc.

furthermore, i don’t trust anything written by a non-Catholic… usually (some people are Catholic and don’t realize it… more Catholic than some Catholics, which aint saying much… ) [Hey… there’s some excellent grammar for you…]

Catholics (catechized) have a healthy fear of God… and therefore are much less likely to lie… or distort/exaggerate in their writings (another form of lying)…

Oh ? Try comparing:

  • Haurietis Aquas (1955) - well-written
  • Salvifici Doloris - to read which, is like swimming through glue.
It is not “anti-Catholic” to criticise linguistic barbarity. BTW - attacking the poster & not the content of the post is not a sign of intelligence. As for:
  • i don’t trust anything written by a non-Catholic
  • what has that to do with the anything on the thread ? FWIW, if one ignores anything not by a Catholic, one is heading for a church with no members but oneself. Ignoring everything non-Catholic is a suicidal position 😦

The worst book I have ever read is the Satanic Bible.

It is just horrible how they describe it in that book.

Red Badge of Courage or Across Five Aprils.
Red Badge was ok, but I enjoyed Across Five Aprils. I read it at 10 or 12 and it was a decent read considering it was a book on the War of Northern Aggression.

When I joined the Army 10 years later I thought about it when we learned about “fixing” bayonets.

No contest.

The Name of the Rose
Maybe so, but Eco made up for it with Foucolts Pendulum. That was an awesome book. Had to read it with my copy of “History of Christianity” by Lattourette handy.

I know there are many good books about religion written by Catholics. Can you give me some titles of novels written by Catholics. I guess we don’t really know what religion the author is when the book is not religious. I’ve probably read some and didn’t even know it.

You are a better woman than me.

Watership Down is the worst book I have ever attempted to read. And it was my favorite teacher in my life, in Catholic middle school, and I have always felt guilty for not enjoying it. I have owned it for yrs, thinking I’ll read it, but honestly, I think I’d die happy without it.
What is the point of the life of rabbits?

I’m trying to find value in it but can’t.
PM me rather than letting me hijack this fun thread.

I also hated my college biology book. And that “Road Less Traveled” book…yet another time-waster one afternoon in the bookstore.
I am amazed to find Watership Down mentioned as a worse book. I read it more then once and then I read it to my kids.
I guess it’s true,one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

My wife just got “Woman Rides the Beast” by Dave Hunt and wants me to read it. I’m going to project that it will land near the top of my worst book list.

i consider a book bad if i do not finish it.

the most recent book that comes to mind is The Shack. i think i got through the first two or three chapters and could not proceed. i couldn’t understand what the fuss was about.

it just couldn’t get in to the way he was telling the story and his style of writing.

I know there are discussions on “What book are you reading?” I’m sure we’ve all read books that we don’t care for.

What is the worst book(s) you have ever read?

My pick of worst books in no particular order:

-Animal Farm by: George Orwell (I read this one back in High School)

-The Chamber by: John Grisham (When people say the book is better than the movie that’s not always true…Not in the case with this book)

-The Da Vinci Code by: Dan Brown (What a waste of time & money)

The worst book I’ve ever read was so bad I can’t bring myself to mention it - & “Mein Kampf”, by one A. Hitler, was bad enough. The author went on to other things, so he never finished the sequel - his “Tabletalk” has its moments.

The second worst was a novel about some murderous 600 year-old monks.

For sheer unreadability, anything Communist must take a high place. Anything emanating from a Party Congress is a deadly form of Mogadon. For something lighter, “What is to be Done ?”, by Comrade Vladimir Ilyich, is good fun.

If a book
  • is printed in an attractive fount
  • has plenty of pages
  • is well written
I’ll tend to go for it. But if it is unattractive as an object, probably I won’t. If a quick inspection reveals many errors of printing, that is a bad sign.

For me, probably Catcher in the Rye and Animal Farm.

Believe it or not, the Lord of the Rings trilogy–while they aren’t the worst books I’ve ever read, I just couldn’t like them so matter much I wanted to.

The worse book I’ve ever read was “The Secret”, I have since been telling everybody that has encountered it, to burn the thing…

Inspiration by Dr Wayne Dyer.

I was reading a lot of self-help books before I “returned to the faith” and I think I can credit this one with helping steer me back.

Dr Wayne Dyer is a pretty big self-help guru to begin with, but when he started claiming he was the reincarnation of St Francis of Assisi, and knew this because of the spiritual path he had taken ever since reading “A course in Miracles” I really felt that I was dealing with something a) delusional and b) something that I really didn’t want to get into.

I threw it in the garbage.

What’s wrong with Animal Farm? That’s like one of my favorite books…

So far, I think the worst book I’ve read is Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf. A close second is The Shack, but for very different reasons. You can read my review of the latter book (“Tearing Down the Shack”) at tiberriver.com .

Beachcomber- For me, probably Catcher in the Rye and Animal Farm

Finally, someone who agrees with me
