Actually I say “uncle” because I’m not exactly sure who it is from… It was sitting in my grandmothers garage for quite some time, and she recently discovered it. Since she is Lutheran, she handed it off to me.

This is an item that is reserved for the priesthood of the Catholic Church. A good thing to do would be to offer it to your local diocese or Catholic Parish. It might also be interesting to look further into how it got there maybe there is an intersting story behind it just waiting for the right sleuth!

It may not be a monstrance. it could be a reliquary.

How tall is it ?

What do you see behind the glass ?

Also, is there any label on the bottom or back with info ?

How tall is it ? It is exactly 15 inches from tip to bottom.

What do you see behind the glass ? the center of the object is an enclosed chamber with glass on either side. On the back side (opposite of photo) can be found a locking mechanism, once unlocked a “door” swings open revealing the inside of the chamber. also… on the inside of the chamber… there is a “rail”, leading me to believe that something can be slid in place within the chamber.

Also, is there any label on the bottom or back with info ? **the only markings I could find were under the base noted as the following **

E1323

Ok, It’s probably a monstrance if it’s that tall.

If there is no Host inside, then there is no problem keeping it, but just don’t bring a host home and put in it.

That’s a no no.

CCC 1323 = “At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet ‘in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.’”

Wow, it is wonderful to finally get some information on the monstrance. Now that I know its Catholic value I will surely guard it even more than before. Thanks so much for the great help!

I don’t know if it’s the best idea to keep a monstrance in one’s home. I would think such a holy object should be given to a Catholic Church. If not for its holiness, then for historical value. I think it should be given to someone who really understands its meaning.

My Grandparents migrated to IL from IN in the late 1800s. We recently had a family reunion at the church in Indiana where they were married. The parish priest has a very old Monstrance displayed in a glass case in the rectory. It is quite beautiful. Father was so proud he could show this to us and it has been protected for so many years.

it may also be a reliquary, a very ornate stand with a glass insert to hold a relic. why not take it to a local Catholic priest and find out.

“What is this Catholic Item?”, now that sounds like a really fun game…🙂 Sort of like the Catholic version of “Antiques Roadshow”, ya know? Wow. Fun.

Hmm, maybe it would make a great thread. 🙂

Edited to add: I’m gonna play it with the kids at Catechism.

Hello Everybody
New member here. Just a thought on this item. if the owner only received it ‘recently’ why does the exif data stored in the image indicate the photograph was taken back in January of this year?

Could be the camera was not properly set up… could be they took the picture, but never had the time/desire/motivation to ask the questions…Lots of other possibilities…

Just guessing, tho…my Mother-in-law still calls us “kids” and I’ve been blessed to share the sacrament of Matrimony with my wife, her oldest daughter, for 32 years now… (you’re still KIDS to me!!) “Yes, Ma’am.”

Goodness me, this is an extremely special item. Please do take it to a Cathoic Priest. It is not the item in and of itself that is important but that (if it is a Monstrance) Our Lord’s Presence has been contained within it. That is truly priceless! 🙂
