apart from this meme, I saw something similar to this in mass, what is it, what is the extra functions? It looks like a cross but why the circular shape.

It is a monstrance. The priest or deacon places the Blessed Sacrament (Jesus in the consecrated host) in the middle and then we all adore Him. It is called Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and ends with communal prayer and Benediction (when the priest or deacon makes the sign of the cross with the monstrance and blesses the people). Pange lingua is often sung as well as Adoro te Devote and also a litany is prayed. Sometimes Adoration is just silent and if there is no priest or deacon present then there isn’t a blessing at the end. It is very common to kneel while praying during adoration. Some people read Scripture while others just sit in silence looking at the Lord.

It is one of those “typical Catholic things” that protestants haven’t seen before. I love it! There are some Sundays during the church year that there is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament right after the homily or just before the end of Mass. My parish have it during the Easter Vigil and the Sunday after Pentecost when we celebrate the Body and Blood of Christ. One Friday per month is also Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after Mass. Some parishes have it all day all night while others have Adoration one hour every week. It really depends upon the parishes.
