I’m thinking it’s a scapular or badge of some sort. I found it in my grandmother’s things after she died recently. Any direction on what it is would be great. I’m really curious as to what the little tied up “package” is at the bottom. It looks like a piece of Bible paper but it’s hard to tell.

Thank you!

It looks like something that have been a badge if your grandmother was in some kind of society at her parish, Legion of Mary, etc.

Are you aware of her being a part of any such groups?

Hi,

I checked it out on google.

Look up the official website of Apostleship of Prayer. League of the Sacred Heart. I also saw some prayer badges [that’s the name I came up with looking at different sites] on ebay and other sites, but yours was the niceset that I saw.

I cannot make out the two left hand medals? Can you describe them for me?

As to the thing that is tied up in the bottom, I wanted to ask if there was a prayer on the back of the prayer badge. If there is, then that prayer on the front of the badge, I am willing to bet, is what is tied in the package.

Thanks.

God Bless.

I have one like it, without the medals. It belonged to my Grandmother. I don’t know how old it is, but she was born in 1905. She always kept it on her nightstand, don’t know if she ever wore it. It is a treasure, though.

Looks like the date on yours is 1938?

She might have been when she was young, but she wasn’t in anything like that the last 30 years of her life. This badge says “copyright 1932.” She would have been ten in 1932. Thanks for your ideas!

Nope, the back is blank. The medals are hard for me to make out (I had to get out an otoscope…), but (I think) the one on the top left says 'Crux S.P. Benedicti," the bottom left looks like a toddler riding on the shoulders of a shepherd (it says nothing), the top right medal says “Regina Decor Carmeli O.P.N.,” and the bottom right medal says “Maria sine labe concepta, O.P.N.”

The package looks like a sheet of very thin Bible paper folded into a teeny tiny square and tied with red embroidery thread. I cannot make out any words on it, though.

Thank you for your ideas!

That sounds like the St Benedict medal. It is considered a powerful defense against the devil.

Legend has it that Satan has a cloven hoof instead of a foot. One day, when St Benedict was shoeing a horse, Satan came by in disguise and asked him to fit a shoe to his hoof. St Benedict saw through the disguise and put the shoe on backward, which caused considerable pain. St Benedict refused to correct it until Satan promised to stay far from him and all in his care. Satan has stayed as far as possible from all things connected with St Benedict ever since. **

I like the story! Maybe this is why a horseshoe is hung upside down for luck–keeps the devil away.

It is the badge of the Apostleship of Prayer, League of the Sacred Heart. I carry one in my wallet and have done so for many years.

Looks like maybe League of the sacred heart “Apostleship of Prayer”. The medal you discribe sounds like St. Christopher. Regina Decor Carmeli is “Our Lady of Mount Carmel”.
Crux S. P. Benedicti is “Cross of the Holy Father Benedict" not sure of the last one. “Mary Without Sin” not sure.

God bless

Hi I think that the “Mary without Sin” is the Miraculous Medal.

God Bless.
