I am very pleased that Catholics (evidentally) believe that people of all faiths can possibly get into heaven.
While this is true, it must not be thought of as religious indifferentism–that is, one religion is as a good as another. If people are not culpable for rejecting the one true faith, they may be saved–not by their false religion, but despite it. But, one cannot be saved who is judged by God to be culpable of rejecting His revealed Truth.

Honestly, I’m just glad that Catholics can recognize that maybe there are other cultures where the people indoctrinate their (very young) children into religions that aren’t Christian and maybe those children aren’t to blame.

This is something many of my protestant friends have a difficult time admitting.

Jews need to have faith in Christ like anyone else to be saved. Their covenant is intact in its fulfilled form, but they are not faithful to it by refusing to put their faith in Jesus Christ.

The People of God, which in Old Testament times was called “Israel” is now called “the Catholic Church.” It is no longer just for faithful Jews (that is, people of the Jewish race who have embraced Jesus and the fullness of truth) but membership has also been extended tofaithful Gentiles as well. Likewise, Jews who reject the gifts of God by refusing to embrace the Messiah are cut off from the people of God. The Second Vatican Council embraced this doctrine greatly throughout Lumen Gentium (it is why it uses the phrase “People of God”). It also explicitly calls the Church, the “new Israel.”

“Israel according to the flesh, which wandered as an exile in the desert, was already called the Church of God.(96) So likewise the new Israel which while living in this present age goes in search of a future and abiding city (97) is called the Church of Christ.(98)”
Thanks for clarifying. Can you direct me to a copy of Lumen Gentium on the internet? I’m curious as to what is says.

I’ve discovered a new fascination I have with Jews after I’ve just come back from a trip to the New York/New Jersey area. We walked past the El Al ticket counter in the JFK Intl. Airport and I was taken aback by all the black suits and wide brimmed hats (I live in Colorado so I’ve never even seen a Jew before)! The airport has a religion area in one of the terminals and right next to the Catholic chapel where the Body of Christ sits is the Jewish synagogue (so close…yet…so…far!:D) I was praying the Psalms next door to Orthodox Jews who were probably praying the Psalms as well! The chaplins’ offices were arranged so that the Rabbi and a Priest shared an office (meanwhile the Protestant minister and the Muslim sheikh got seperate offices from each other…which is probably for the better!!) That experience got me thinking how we relate to Judaism and why we’re so close to them.

I’m kind of confused. Are you saying that Catholics believe Jews go to heaven?
I am saying that God does not repent of his gifts. I also gave a list of links to the teachings of three recent Popes. They set out in detail reasons against replacement theology.

now “Israel” - the Hebrew race and the people of the “Jewish” faith are now outside of “God’s Chosen”.
No. This is not what the Church teaches. God does not repent of His gifts. The Jews are God’s Chosen People. Gentiles are the branches grafted onto the tree.

But the unbelieving Jews were pruned off, while those Jews who were Baptized remained. Just like in the OT, the Jews only partake of the gifts when they are faithful–and now that means faithful to Christ (unless they are invincibly ignorant).

Read this chapter of Romans, including the footnotes which are helpful in this matter–affirming that God does not repent of His gifts, but explaining that unbelief cuts one off including Jews.

I’ve posted what the Church teaches. The Church teaches that replacement theology is unacceptable.
