By the way, its not very Christian to accuse someone of being a lawyer.

I agree, there might be a worse insult, I just can’t think of one right now.By the way, its not very Christian to accuse someone of being a lawyer.
The issue is not whether this woman should have been talking on the phone, the issue is whether an usher has the authority to confiscate personal property from anyone, rude or otherwise. He does not.…The woman in question was asked to leave, and refused that option. Therefore, she got what she deserved.

I’ll bet your parish is choke-full of cell phones ringing during the Mass. Hey! Maybe the celebrant can have those people arrested? Gotta be some charge on the books that you could make stick – something as foolish as arresting an usher for confiscating a cell phone until the end of Mass for instance? The issue is not whether this woman should have been talking on the phone, the issue is whether an usher has the authority to confiscate personal property from anyone, rude or otherwise. The legal way to handle a case of someone who creates a serious disturbance in church and refuses to cease this disturbance is to call the police and make a complaint of disorderly conduct. By taking the law into his own hands this usher may have exposed himself and possibly his parish to liability for damages.
No, very seldom.I’ll bet your parish is choke-full of cell phones ringing during the Mass…

netsmilmom,You know, I remember people passing out or dying right there in my non-Air conditioned church in the 70’s. Happened every week. We’d just look around and pray for his eternal soul. One time, Sister Petronia mistook some kid for sleeping and bopped him in the head with a metal ruler. He was dead he didn’t mind.
It’s such a good thing that we now know to bring water bottles to our Holy Mass.![]()
Oh no! I’m so sorry, I thought that the winks at the end would let you know I was kidding.netsmilmom,
You weren’t kidding about this? A young boy died during Mass? That is so very sad. How did he die? Heat stroke?
Oh no! I’m so sorry, I thought that the winks at the end would let you know I was kidding.
My point was that even at the beginning or end of the school year, with wool uniforms and no AC in our church, no one ever passed out or died because they didn’t have a water bottle.
I apologize if you misunderstood. Truly.
Ok, if you see me in church on Sunday taking my bottle of water out of my purse and taking a swig - here’s why. Can’t they go 45-60 minutes without a drink? It doesn’t happen at my home parish, but at a lot of the more “progressive” ones in the area.
While this reason is just, I can think of a better one.Always try and give people the benefit of the doubt and you’ll have more inner peace.![]()
Then you should either discreetly sit in the back of the church or you should step outside to have your sip. I have a medical condition too, in which my swallowing muscles are affected. Sometimes it’s very difficult for me to swallow my host. I drink water constantly during meals to facilitate my swallowing. I have never taken a bottle inside church - I have left it in my car. When incense is used, I sit in the back, because I have had to step out for a moment.Ok, if you see me in church on Sunday taking my bottle of water out of my purse and taking a swig - here’s why.
I have a medical condition which causes me to have dry eyes and dry mouth. In addition I take medication which also can cause dry mouth. No, I can not go without 45-60 min. without water. My mouth and throat get dry and I start coughing. Now this is the reason I have a drink of water in church, maybe some other people have similar conditions. I can’t speak for all people though, just telling you my side of the story.
