When you go to confession and repeat the same old sins the Priest may not allow forgiveness. This is not all Priest but some will expect there not repeated.
Thats not an implication, thats your interpretation to what I said. This implies that if someone goes to confession frequently and is not scrupulous then they are more sinful than others.
Good point. I should include this on my next confessionI wonder how many people confess CAF.![]()
There is no such thing. A priest can only withhold absolution if you’ve proven to be unrepentant. Sins are habits, we usually sin the same sin over and over. We have our weaknesses. I can walk into a casino, play casually, spend a low amount of money, and never obsess about it. I know other people have gambling problems, but not me. I have other weaknesses though. Getting cured from sin is a process. A doctor who sees you have cancer and treats you cancer doesn’t tell you not to see him again if you have the same cancer after its been treated. Doing the same sin again is not a sign of unrepentance, its a sign that you are human. When you go to confession and repeat the same old sins the Priest may not allow forgiveness. This is not all Priest but some will expect there not repeated.
This concept itself is self defeating. If a person comes and confesses a sin and the confessor refuses absolution because it is a “repeated sin”, just how and when can the penitent ever receive absolution??? The whole concept makes no sense. When you go to confession and repeat the same old sins the Priest may not allow forgiveness. This is not all Priest but some will expect there not repeated.
James, peace to you. You are just dead wrong on this issue. This concept itself is self defeating. People go to confession because they are sorry for their sins and intend to not repeat them. However, intent does not always translate into action and we can fall back into the same sin over and over as we struggle to grow in faith and holiness.
I know of no priest who would withhold absolution in anything but the most extreme - hardly to be encountered - type situations.
I must say charlie that you seem to make some of the most interesting statements, make them as sounding “factual” but then offer nothing “documented” to back them up…
I’m sure you do not intend it to be but it get’s kind of irritating sometimes…

Catholics do go to other RC church for confession because they know a Priest will not allow confession and absolution for their repeated sins at their local church. So basically they shop their sins at another RC church. All Priests are not cut n paste , do the same thing.
Don’t worry James…its not necessarily a bad thing that Priests expect more then oops I did it again.
Whatever…

Some Catholics with repeated sins may go to another confessor out of embarrassment of repeating the same sins - not because the priest won’t give absolution.James, peace to you. You are just dead wrong on this issue.

Amen, brother!. While I’m still nowhere near perfect and am very much in need of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I believe that it has helped me to grow as a Catholic and be more receptive to the Lord’s graces.
I don’t tell my parents I go to confession, especially weekly. If they’re visiting and they ask where I’m going, I simply say, “I’m going to meet someone.”My dad always wonders why I go to confession so frequently, since I “never do anything” that would warrant it (oh, if only he knew the kinds of sins I committed in the past…); my mom said that frequent confession isn’t necessary because no one in our household’s ever committed a mortal sin (wow, if that’s the case then I must live with a truly special family).I guess they just don’t understand why the sacrament and its associated graces are necessary as part of living a fully Catholic life, but I just have to keep praying that one day they will understand.
would this be considered a lie?I don’t tell my parents I go to confession, especially weekly. If they’re visiting and they ask where I’m going, I simply say, “I’m going to meet someone.”
Now Monica, don’t be scrupulous…Originally Posted by Deo Gratias42 View Post

“Deo Gratias42” is not telling a lie. She IS going to meet someone…The Priest AND our Lord in the confessional.

Exactly. No, I couldn’t tell my family I’m going to church. They already think I spend too much time there. I got lectured for going to Mass on Sunday when I had a term paper that needed to be written. I was told to just do something nice for someone later on in the week to make up for not going. Now Monica, don’t be scrupulous…

I hear this sort of thing from people and think, If we are being accused of being “too religious” or being “holier than thou” we are either on the right path or we are becoming Pharisitic.Exactly.
